Located in the center of the gold mining district of California, Calaveras County is rich in history, tradition, romance and lore. Whether you plan to spend an hour or an entire day, come to San Andreas and enjoy the Historic Downtown Museum. Open daily 10-4. The Downtown Museum is located on historic Main Street in San Andreas. Comprised of three buildings, the Museum is a reflection of the history of Calaveras County, its industry, its people, and even its notorious outlaws. The Museum is included in European travel guides as a "must see" destination and we have guests from all over the world.
This was a planned stop on a long drive from Placerville down to Mariposa. We hadn't even hit the "why did we do this" section of Route 49, so I'm glad was stopped at this multi-building bit of history. Easy parking, excellent Hcap access, lovely...MoreThank you for your review. We are proud of our county heritage and love the opportunity to share it with our visitors!

What a great, down home yet classy and modern place. There are plenty of wines to choose from and my favorite - craft beers on draught. Sounded like they serve home-made dinners on most Friday and Saturday nights. It was Chicken Parm when I visited and I enjoyed it very much.
Seems family owned and very friendly. Beautiful patio with heaters. I felt warm and comfy even while it rained. What a great place!! Nice beers, under the stars with good people to the sound of the falling rain. Def glad we stopped here.
I love Moke Hill!

It was very beautiful years ago when it was old hogan, now with the water so low. It's not very pretty at all. Remember going for hikes on back of dam , and having these really great little ponds when you were going up. Now the water isn't there and you can't get up . What a disappointment.

Sometimes, we just enjoy stepping back in time and experiencing something a little different. I find Mokelumne Hill to be a friendly, and authentic Gold Rush Town in the Sierras. It is not large, or too touristy, but, yet, enough to capture one's interest. The Hotel Leger is great. The people there went out of their way to make sure our stay was outstanding. The restaurant was a very pleasant surprise, we love great food, and did not expect their restaurant to be of such high quality. Our server was also very good.

In the historic gold mining town of Mokelumne Hill, Petroglyphe Gallery is located in a building originally constructed in 1858. They feature imaginative contemporary works of art in oil, acrylic, watercolor, glass, ceramic, copper, and present drypoint etchings and jewelry. Part of the gallery is Copper & Willow Inspired Gifts offering unique American made items, each with its own story.
Super gallery nestled in a quaint historic community.
An unexpected gem. The gallery is filled with high quality items you would normally find in a much more sofisticated location like Santa Fe
or Carmel.
Prices are higher but good value for money.
If your looking for that special unique item to take home from your outing you can find it here.

I have been working in caves for fun and as a professional national park naturalist and cave geologist... California Caverns is a gem. Located 32 miles from Angles camp 9 miles off 49 it is in the rural epicenter of the real mother lode.
The cave is operated very professionally by the same folks who operate Moaning cave and Black Chasm. which you really should see. as they are each different and offer excellent and different experiences.... see at least 2 if you visit as the are all within 50 miles .
The tours are run hourly and are kept small to 10 persons by well informed guides and last 60 to 90 min.. No colored lights or cheesy development. If you havent been in a real limestone cave...and want to experience a developed yet very natural experience then come here The jungle room in the cave is an exceptional gem of beauty filled with pure white growing formations undamaged by anyone. There is some stooping and small pasages , lakes, large rooms, beautiful banded marble and so much more.
If you get into the intrigue of wanting more of real cave exploration yet do it safe and sane in one of the most beautiful sections of cave they call "mddle earth " a 4 hour tour de force with crawling climbing boating and viewing fantastic displaye of formations of all sorts ,
This it the finest place to discover your first "wild" cave experience that I know of in the west, outside of Carlsbad Caverns or Wind or e Jewell caves in South Dakota or New Mexico. The wild cave tour includes all your gear and a guide...just flat our a wonderful experience, so much more than just an adventure. It is something quite memorable and something to experience .
If you seek a thrill ride go to an amusement park...if you want to discover yourself and the mysteries of the earth then come here. You will NOT be let down !!!
Od course thats my opinion after 55 years in caves and cave science in over 2500 caves from the mountains of Poland to the jungles of Borneo. California caverns is one of the best places I know of to discover caves..., But what do I know!
