Visit a huge, sparkling clean Antiques Mall in a 100 year old Cotton Mill. Also see our gallery of new "sent back" furniture and home décor, "sent back" by people who ordered from America's largest online furniture company. Then there are rooms and rooms of "sent back" ladies fashions, shoes, purses, linens, Christmas decorations and other items, all sent back (usually unopened) by people who ordered from America's largest TV shopping networks. This place is huge, and its always fun to explore to see what we have found to offer to you at less than half price.
The Riverside Mill also offers a clothing outlet and an artisan's gallery as well as 100+ antique vendors. The antique mall part of it is great. It's well organized with clean aisles and friendly people working there. We found a few things that we didn't even know we needed or wanted. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. Look for the big fish and you will know you're in the right area.
The historic water-driven cotton mill sits on the banks of the Roanoke River. The railroad tracks were called "the lifeline of the confederacy". You can also walk to the foundations of a confederate hospital and a confederate graveyard.

We stopped for gas at the exit and noticed the signs for peanuts. What a wonderful find this place turned out to be. It is located in a historic old store just across the railroad tracks. They have samples of everything they sell and encourage you to try as many as you want. Dozens of flavors of peanuts and other nuts at very reasonable prices. A rare true piece of America still is here with fields of peanuts beside the road. This was one of the highlights of our trip and should not be missed.

The museum and trail commemorate the old Roanoke Canal. Museum is modest and closes at 3pm on weekdays, but is worth a free hour of your time. The trail is well kept, well marked and has several distance options and is level one difficulty which makes it very useable for a wide range of walkers. Lots of folks bring dogs so watch out for meadow muffins!
Nice option for a break in a long road trip.

This was by far the worst state welcome center I have ever visited. The men's bathroom was a disaster area. It smelled badly, and there was trash everywhere. I would gladly stop at a convenience store bathroom over this place.

Normally, a stop at a visitors center might not seem too exciting. But for travelers with a dog and/or kids, this one is a god send. This visitors center is just off I-95 and has a DOG RUN! And within walking distance there is a Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks & gas station! Fido can stretch his legs, kids can get their Chick-fil-As, parents can get a Starbucks fix, and the car can get gassed up all in one stop. Oh, and go into the visitors center and have fun talking to Greg! He's a riot!
