Diamondback Golf Course

Reviewed By WVParkfan - Morgantown, West Virginia

First off, I got to play for free this year due to an arrangement with our hotel. But traditionally, Diamondback is one of the least expensive courses in the Myrtle Beach area because it is farther out than most.

Very light crowd on the July morning when I tee'd off. In fact, they let me play alone and go out by myself. Within 3 holes, I was alone on the course.

The layout is tough, and even though it is not one of the premier courses, it is maintained better than our courses back home. Some of the openings in the trees off of the tee boxes are tight, and there are some marshlands where it is difficult to get to a good landing.

I think the course is beautiful. But stay on the fairway. It's called Diamondback for a reason.

Long Bay Golf Club

Reviewed By Lee C - Pewaukee, Wisconsin

The particulars: four guys who flew into Wilmington airport (ILM). We were looking for a North MB golf course to get a quick afternoon round in on our way to MB proper. We desired to ease into our trip before playing 36 each day. We needed a quick pace of play in order to finish. We wanted to spend $60 or less.

The Long Bay Golf Club was a winner on all fronts.

A tee time was procurred while driving from Wilmington ($42!). We checked in, played, and were back in our car driving all within a four hour window (golfed in 3:35).

We played 162 holes over five days (9 rounds). The best conditioned greens were played were at Long Bay Golf Club. Mind you, I think they were a bit on the slow side, but for our first round, I'd rather have greens in great shape than speed. The playing cooridors were wide enough to allow all range of players to get off the tee without losing many golf balls, but there were better angles to take for the better players. While the greens were in pristine condition, they were small, so accurate iron play is essential or you better have a good chipping game to score. The routing is nothing special, but I suppose the course was designed as a real estate play, so housing considerations had to come first.

Given it's North MB location, I think this will remain an underutilized course. That's ok with us, as we will return on our next NB visit.

Course has lot's of water, both regular and lateral hazards. Four fairways were also wet enough forcing cart path only on those holes. Greens were larger and in good shape for late November. Better low end Myrtle Beach area course.

Black Bear Golf Club

Reviewed By Jasperlou - St. Catharines, Ont. Canada

The layout is decent, fairways are in bad shape. Sand is non existant in sand traps. Greens had very little grass but lots of sand.
No beverage carts, only when busy and it's understandable why they aren't busy.
Happy hour of $1.00 beers and hotdogs and the nice couple we met while golfing at least made the day enjoyable.

Shaftesbury Glen Golf and Fish Club

A sister course to the established Glen Dornoch and Heather Glen, Shaftesbury Glen is among the most recent additions to the Grand Strand.

Reviewed By Casey1919 - Somerset, Pennsylvania

Shaftsbury may have the best overall green side bunkers on the strand. Elevated greens on almost every hole with huge greens make playing out of these bunkers enjoyable and frustrating at the same time. The greens are very quick and the overall excellent course conditions make for a challenging day. Choose your tees wisely as this course plays long but is very open off of the tee. Give yourself at least 1/2 club more on approach shots because of the elevated greens. The staff is excellent and the course is great. A wonderful day.
