The cool waters of Forest Lake provide the centerpiece for Thousand Hills State Park, whose woody shores and broad savannas recall a time when northern Missouri was far less developed. The lake offers fishing, swimming and boating. The park offers hiking, mountain biking, and abundant opportunities to see wildlife. An interpretive shelter helps visitors understand the petroglyphs left behind by the area’s inhabitants more than 1,500 years ago. The park also offers campsites and cabins for overnight stays.

We took our camper and camped in campground 2 at site 57. Got in late so checked in with host at campground 1 next morning. They were both VERY friendly, welcoming, and wished us a nice stay. Our campsite was partially shaded but faced towards timber so it felt organized private. Campground 2 is new, smaller than 1, but very cozy. Shower house was brand new. Only suggestion there is more ventilation is needed in them so they aren't so swelteringly hot. We used the restaurant and the food and service was phenomenal! We rented two kayaks and a pontoon boat to boat with friends. Staff are super helpful and nice. We didn't have to pay until we returned. They asked each time upon returning if we had a good time. Dock staff were fun but reinforced rules politely for safety.
We had glass and plastic to recycle but couldn't find the receptacles for it so ended up throwing it away. Put some near dumpster! :-)
This park is a Missouri best kept secret! It's not packed full or over crowded, has great amenities, exceptional staff, beautiful grounds, and lots of water fun!!

The DuKum Grille brings some of the best food in town to the table. Fast, delicious and not too filling to have another beer. Our feature is the "2nd Best Cheeseburger in Town" topped with grilled peppers and onions on a toasted bun. We have also brought back the old Taco Shoppe fry bread tacos. Other favorites include chicken strips, BBQ riblets, peel & eat jumbo shrimp, and a battered tenderloin sandwich. Add some mouth watering onion rings on the side, locally famous and hand made from scratch. We've also added some crispy and scrumptious appetizers to our menu.

This place has been updated and is a nice hang-out right off the square. It is smoke-free and they have good bar type food. The service has always been good.

We booked this for my son's 10th birthday party. While I think it would be fine for a teenage group or adult group's party, I wouldn't recommend if for a kid's birthday party unless they improve their training for the staff.The boys did not escape, and my son left his "fun birthday experience" feeling disappointed because they had failed. If you want to spend $140 so your young child and friends can work hard, fail, and feel miserable at the end, go for it. According to the staff working there, "most people fail", According to the owner, "50% of the people fail". Either way, there is a pretty good chance that the kids won't accomplish their goal. Which brings up the next problem...the staff should have explained a lot more at the beginning. They were not trained well enough to follow their own rules or offer age-appropriate facilitation.
Here's what happened...I booked the room, paid in advance, and sent my husband to accompany the boys. It is the job of the facilitator to explain the rules and policies to the group, especially if it is their first time. My husband was invited to participate by the staff, but he thought it would be better to watch the boys do their "treasure hunt" on their own. By their own rules, the staff should have told my husband it was a requirement for him to go with them, and that if he wanted them to be successful, he is responsible for actively helping them. This would have been easy for the staff to communicate to any attending adult. But they didn't, and when I emailed the owner claimed that my husband had "refused to help". This is an absurd claim on many levels. First of all, if your own rule is to have an attending adult, why would you even start the activity until the adult was in attendance? Second of all, my husband loves to help, he was actively trying to be there and watch, but not to disturb their activity. If they expect an adult to be present and coach the kids for them to succeed, it should have been explained beforehand. Not in an email after it was all over.
Finally, I wrote to the owners directly to express all my concerns. Rather than take responsibility for the staff not explaining things appropriately to the group, resulting in a train wreck of a birthday party, she was defensive and dismissive. That is no way to run any small business. The business is a good idea and the puzzles were well done, but a positive experience is more that a location and good props.

We loved West Winery in Macon MO and decided to try the winery in Jackson Stables, Kirksville. It was an interesting drive to get there.....we drove some gravel roads rather than coming through Kirksville. It was a week night in the fall and there were 3 other people there plus a bridal shower party. The decor is very cool....The girl who served our wine was very informed and talkative. We enjoyed ourselves immensely! It would be fun to go there during the spring/summer when one could enjoy the scenery. But we love West Winery wines and had a great time!

This place is so much fun for the family, we find it affordable and love the fact that all the lifegaurds are very attentive to the swim areas, we feel like our children are in safe hands and are always watched no matter if we are by their side or not:) We are satisfied with this place 100%

On the campus of Truman State University, Robison Planetarium in Magruder Hall is worth visiting. The planetarium was outfitted in 2014 and provides the same type of experience as can be found at the planetarium in Kansas City. The students who narrated the show we saw made it fun. It is great that the facility is open to the community. Also try to see the animal collection near the west entry. Our kids enjoy seeing the big snakes and turtles. There is also a full skeleton of a horse by the east entry of Magruder Hall.
