So happy my husband and I went to do the tour of this beautiful, historic home in Ellsworth.
The self-guided tour is perfect! You can take as much time or as little time as you wish! Every room has a main passsage, but there are also many other additional things you can listen to if you wish. We took a very long time - took us an hour and a half, but a couple came as we were about half way through and they finished before us - so it's perfect for everyone.
Such an incredibly interesting family and I had never heard of them. The house is filled with their belongings and their story - it's like if you waited a short time, they might come back and you could have a conversation with them.
The docent who was on duty was so knowledgeable had helpful and she had just moved from California to Maine in April - yet she knew all kinds of cool and interesting tidbits she showed us. For instance, the fire door from the old kitchen to the rest of the house is fabulously interesting and isn't part of the audio tour - I assume so every single person who goes through isn't closing a heavy metal door on the rest of the visitors.
It is a fantastic tour and I'm sure we'll be back. We didn't have time to explore the gardens and trails, but we will definitely check them out another time we're in the area.

Stanwood Homestead Museum and Bird Sanctuary

Birdsacre is about a 200 acre sanctuary a short drive from Ellsworth and is definitely worth the visit. The museum has lots of displays (birds, bird egg collection, bird nests, historical information about the life of Cordelia Starwood, etc.). Great place for childern (and adults) to get up close and personal with some of the hawks and owls kept at the sanctuary. One of the few places where you can see several live Saw Whet Owls. Stan is one of the long term staff members and has a wealth of knowledge about birds and how to treat injured birds brought to the sanctuary. Visit when you have several hours to spend in the museum and walking the trails.

The 1-1/2 hour narrated train ride was truly a step back in time. The conductor was extremely knowledgabe and passionate. The rail car we rode in had a great background that was explained on a plaque that was highly visible. The ride, turn-around - and "Y" procedure makes one appreciate how hard rail travel really was in time past.

Connection Church is a downeast Maine down home style, very welcoming and down to earth practical relational applicable messages and simple non-judgemental pure fellowship of people. The worship is contemporary and varied from band style music to hymns and holiday traditional. Kevin & Kim Jones are "one of us", honest folks and open, not much to wonder about, you get what you see. I love Connection Church ! I'd searched for 4 years (though that was part time), and was sure the 1st visit. Come try it out for yourself.
