Altough some of the displays are a little "rag-tag" - this museum stands out as one of the finest of its kiind that we have ever experienced. The Hart-Parr/Oliver/White tractor section with its repository of fantastic historic tractors is "worth the price of admission".
The Salsbury Laboratory archive is amazing as are all of the "small town Iowa" booths and displays. Amazingly, the visitor has access to all of the displays in the museum without any restrictions. This is Iowa small town trustworthyness at its finest.
A GREAT stop when in northern Iowa!!!

The Interpretive Center has a 55-inch electronic touch table that tells the story of Carrie growing up on a pioneer farm AND tells about her attending Charles City schools, Iowa Agricultural College (now ISU), teaching in a one-room school, and her career as an educator in Mason City (teacher, principal, superintendent).
Activities for children include pioneer dress-up clothes, interactive displays, and making apple cider!

Located inside the Charles City Public Library is The Mooney Art Collection. It reflects both Arthur Mooney's love of art and of the community where he grew up. The collection features the works of classical artists such as Dali (seen on the left), Picasso, Rembrandt and Goya. The Mooney Art Collection is open for public viewing whenever the library is open.
A sizeable collection of prints, almost all from household-name artists, and all really fine specimens, as good as you'd see in any well-known museum. They're mounted where you can get a really close look, too. Prints by, let's see...Durer, Daumier, Whistler, Manet, Hiroshige, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, plus the ones noted in the previous review, and many more--I can't even remember them all. You just never know what you'll find in small-town Iowa! Located in the public library.

I recently moved to Charles City and was delighted at the quality of the local art center! Not only do they offer a number of programs and classes for the community but they always have wonderful installations on display. They frequently change installations and always have a grand opening event which is a great way to get the feel of "city culture" in small town Iowa! The Charles City Art Center is something that I am proud of when I talk about my new hometown!
