We went white water rafting here on August 20th. We were a group of 21 of us. The area got about 3 inches of rain a few days earlier which made the rafting trip an exciting and thrilling ride. I've also done white water rafting...MoreThank you Bonnie! It was great to take you all down the river! Until next time!

Jay Cooke State Park

Reviewed By Mr_and_Mrs_Cuddles - Washington DC, District of Columbia

On the outskirts of Duluth and one quick turn off Highway 210, this state park offers a wonderful place to spend a day outdoors. The swinging bridge is a must – part of an excellent walking path, it comes with its own boatload of history, the current bridge being the fifth one built on that spot. (A sign at the north end of the bridge explains the bridge’s history, a great example of engineering and tenaciousness.) The bridge crosses the beautiful St. Louis River, lined on both sides with boulders, making it both picturesque and a great spot for hours of scrambling over the rocks. Right at the south end of the bridge, an easy climb down a gravel path can bring you right to the water’s edge, just the start of the scrambling possibilities.

For those wanting more purely horizontal walk, the walking paths on both sides offer nice views of the river, along with benches every so often for the occasional rest. Especially in fall, the colors alone make the walk very worth it. With picnic and camping facilities, the park has great opportunities for extended visits, though we weren’t able to stay longer than a couple of hours in this initial stop.

Streetcar Kitchen and Pub

This is a casual, relaxing bar with excellent food and drinks. The BBQ Blue chicken wings are really tasty. They grind their own meat for the burgers and they are juicy. I ordered mine medium rate for max flavor. My husband had the Mediterranean flat bread with gyro meat which he gives a thumbs up. They have a good beer and drink menu and excellent service. I would drive out of my way to visit this place.

Black Bear Casino

Resort casino features "Blackjack Alley" with 18 tables, 1,250 video slot machines, 150 video poker machines and high-stakes bingo.

Spent a weekend at the hotel attached to the Black Bear Casino. I thought the rooms were nice, clean, but had nothing extra. We had a great view of the forest and saw the sunset each night. There is a lingering smoke scent throughout despite it being a non-smoking floor. There was not a refrigerator in our room which was disappointing. We only ate one meal at the restaurant---a breakfast buffet. It was very good. Great choices and omelet station along with many breakfast sweets. Loved the fresh fruit options. Very reasonable price. Pool area looked clean and was often full. The service throughout our stay was fantastic. I would certainly not hesitate to stay here again. The rates were much cheaper than many of the places near Duluth.

Willard Munger State Trail

Biking this trail is a blast. People also walk, run or roller-blade. All sorts of activity on the trail! Many people using it, so I never felt too isolated. The trail is nice, but going to the upper ridge by the Buffalo house is not for the infirm!
