Nearly two months ago, Tour Connections Lagunas de AtacamaCHILE guide NADIA alerted me to the third (Salar de UyuniBolivia & AtacamaCHILE are the other two) great salt basin Salinas GrandeARGENTINA, which became an obvious completion factor for my bucket list during my Tierra del Fuego odyssey, 14JAN-07APR2020. Overnighting at the fabulous La Reliquia in perfect PurmamarcaARGENTINA was essential to enjoying/learning about this critical climate. At the corner of Libertad & Rivadavia is where I submitted my name to the collectivo organizer, where I obtained a great seat (as a slightly mobility disabled person) for a perfect view of the winding switchback-filled route. We had a short break at an excellent viewpoint. I am SO GLAD this was exceptionally well-organized, the driver so skilled, and AMS didn’t affect me too much! It certainly gets my hearty “iWheel of Approval!” I encourage EVERYBODY to leave the driving to them so you can enjoy this amazing road as you visit the superb Salinas Grande-Purmamarca connection!

Purmamarca is a really beautiful town , the church, the old tree in its yard, the hill , of course, the llamas, the food ( we bought empanadas and we ate them while walking by the streets) . It’ s a gift for your eyes & soul.

I’ve already posted about the Seven colours hills and Purmamarca in a seperate post so will just sum up that this 3 km walk is very easy ( although it is at 2,500m) and you can get a little map from the tourist office and walk the 3km Los Colorado Poseo ( you can also drive but walking way better) to see all the colours and layers of the many hills formed from as long as 3-4 million years ago. You can climb some rock stacks fir better views and grab an icy pole and cafe at the end of the loop .

The road from Purmamarca to the Salinas Grandes was breath taking with the even changing coloured mountains and rock formations. The very steep winding road offered such spectacular views. The road took us from around 2000 m to 4170 m at the highest point where we stopped for a few minutes to take photos on unsteady feet. I highly recommend this drive.
