6 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Bath That You Shouldn't Miss

August 31, 2021 Matilde Konrad

Having launched its first ship over 400 years ago, and still home to the Bath Iron Works shipbuilders, the city of Bath is proud of its maritime history. The Maine Maritime Museum celebrates this long heritage, with 25 acres of historic waterfront featuring original 19th century shipyards and exhibits. Named one of the "Best Small Cities in America," Bath offers visitors the opportunity to wander down treelined streets, along the Kennebec River and past beautifully restored 19th century homes.

Maine Maritime Museum

Maine Maritime Museum is located on a beautiful 20-acre campus on the banks of the Kennebec River in historic Bath, Maine, and open year round. May through October, visitors can enjoy one of our daily lighthouse cruises or saiI on the historic 1906 schooner Mary E. Our BIW Story tour provides an exclusive look at modern-day shipbuilding. Indoors, visitors enjoy air-conditioned galleries with exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages. Outdoors, visitors can join a guided tour of the historic Percy & Small Shipyard, learn about lobstering, enjoy lunch under the sculpture of the schooner Wyoming (the largest wooden sailing vessel built in North America), see a blacksmith at work in his shop, watch wooden boats being built in the Boatshop, or play on a pirate ship. There's so much to see, admission is good for tow days. See why USA Today named Maine Maritime Museum the best museum in Maine!

Informative staff who led us on a tour of the former ship making building during the early 1900's. The guide tours knew so much history and then we had a boat tour on the river around the Bath Iron Works which took us by 2 ships being built for the US Navy. It was a WOW event. History buffs and former military should put this on their bucket list.

A happen chance opportunity & one I am glad to have stayed to experience. The docent was charming, knowledgeable and the displays were interesting. I was alone, but there was a young family there at the same time & I noted with delight that the youngsters were interested and curious as well.

Well, another trip to wonderful Bath and and Lisa-Marie's. This time around, my purchases included two bibs for a baby boy whose dad is a die-hard Bruins and Patriots fan. Lisa-Marie's wrapped them beautifully in paper with a blue anchor pattern that connotes Bath's shipbuilding (see pics). The works of several talented Maine craftspersons are featured, and it's always a pleasure to shop here -- so many unique high-quality yet affordable items, and friendly service. There's also one in Portland, but this store is much bigger.
