Located in Cheires, a village in the Douro Valley, Casa dos Lagares - which has belonged to the Morais Vilela family since the seventeenth century - is the "home" of Fragulho wine and of approximately 17 hectares of the property’s vineyards that encompass the Quinta da Silva, Quinta dos Azeredos, Quinta de Cheires and Fragulho.

This modern museum built behind a preserved façade has well displayed, interesting artefacts depicting the bread and wine making that this village is famous for. Our guide was excellent and interspersed her explanations with stories about the history of the village and her own life here. There are also interactive displays that children as well as adults will enjoy. Trying to identify different smells in wine was particularly challenging but fun. We also watched a video made by local children encouraging people to visit. They obviously enjoyed making it and we enjoyed watching it. We ended with a spectacular view over the valley from the balcony.

Great place to go and find out something about the region and the wine. The entrance fee is 6€ per person and at the end you get a glass of wine.
