The site of America's third lighthouse and the first in Rhode Island dates back to 1749.
The lighthouse museum wasn't open when we were there (Nov) but the lighthouse, keepers'house, grounds and coastal views were astounding! The history was written on displays outside museum. Gave great overall historical information, origin of Beavertail Lighthouse, storms the keepers had to endure (no system to track and warn of hurricanes), the disastrous 1938 hurricane damage to that lighthouse, and the tragedy of the Whale Rock Lighthouse less than a mile off land from Beavertail being destroyed, killing the keeper whose body was never found. Beavertail Lighthouse and the rocky coast near sunset provided me with awe-inspiring photo ops. It was November and the seas were very dramatic. Recommend visiting in months open. Nov most places in area to visit were closed. The scenery is always open!

Explore this 265-acre property, which today is a working family farm owned by Historic New England. In 1789 Job Watson purchased a piece of this rich farmland, and for the next two centuries five generations of the Watson family cultivated it. Watson Farm is open from June 1 to October 15 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 1:00 – 5:00, by appointment for group tours, and by reservation for special events. During open hours, take a self-guided walking tour, participate in an outdoor workshop, explore farm fields with grazing livestock, stroll along the shore, and view seasonal farm activities. Using innovative sustainable practices, the managers of Watson Farm continue the tradition of pastoral husbandry, grazing Heritage Red Devon cattle and sheep on the scenic seaside pastures. The farmers produce 100% grass-fed beef and lamb and wool blankets for local markets.

This is a quintessential symbol of Newport. It's the longest bridge in New England and provides awesome views of the harbor, Newport and beyond. I've driven over it multiple times....flown over it in an airplane and even sailed under it. It's a beauty from all angles. It's best viewed on land from the shoreline of Newport, and in the evening when it is all lit up. Absolutely beautiful.
