Building on its must-visit location, the once-tiny El Calafate has grown quickly to cater to and profit from the visitors to nearby Los Glaciares National Park. Many visit to see such natural wonders as Perito Moreno Glacier, a massive glacier that’s actually composed of many other pieces of shifting ice. Yet travelers will find that El Calafate is much more than merely a gateway to the Patagonian wild—it’s a fun town offering all sorts of outdoor adventures.

La Usina complex is the ideal place to live a pleasant day in the heart of the Patagonian forest, just meters from the Mitre River. This is a unique proposal, which allows you to do different activities such as horseback riding, cycling, or simply relax on the deck on the banks of the river, the restaurant offers grilled lamb and various a la carte dishes at lunchtime and cafeteria with tea cakes.
Folks @La Usina are so friendly and take care to make you feel right at home and comfortable. We were staying in town but I signed my family up for a 2 hr trip on horseback. We are complete beginners and Omar, our guide was absolutely fantastic taking time to Saddle us up and getting us comfortable on the horses. By the way, the horses are Super laid back and calm. They will trot however if you want to do that. But don’t expect to gallop roam free. These are trails and the horses seem to know where they are going. There are some incredible trails with beautiful scenery on this Ranch and I even herded some cattle. We all had a great time on our horseback adventure at La Usina. Upon our returnThe lunch we ordered was prepared and it was absolutely fantastic. I mean really good and rates there are the lowest I’ve seen...anywhere, ever. My family loved our day here and it is one of the most memorable experiences of our trip next to our glacier adventures. I highly recommend.

End your day with a leisurely stroll down El Calafate’s main street, where you’ll find stores, internet access, tourist agencies and great restaurants for an evening repast.
Beautiful small city in the middle of the Argentine Patagonia, full of good restaurants, wide avenues, outdoor activities, parks, gentle people, views to the Andes mountain range, lakes and wide open range. We used this city as the entrance point to visit and navigate the Glacier Park lakes and see Perito Moreno Glacier from lake view. In short, one of the best travel experiences I have had in my life, is likely I will re-visit sometime soon.

My wife and I attended Christmas mass at this little church, and In spite of the language barrier, the simple beauty of the church and the songs made it feel like Christmas. Behind the altar is a glass wall which provides a view of the green, sunny prayer garden.

The paintings on the rock walls of this cave are attributed to aborigines during the Paleolithic age, and have been restored where needed using the same ancient techniques.
Great experience . Nice and kind staff :-) interesting explanation about Patagonian ancestors . Delicious lunch and sharing with other visitors in a cave . All this with the lake Argentino right in front of you. Highly recommended .
