Kostroma Oblast (Russian: Костромска́я о́бласть, Kostromskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Kostroma and its population as of the 2010 Census is 667,562. It was formed in 1944 on the territory detached from neighboring Yaroslavl Oblast.

The monastery was founded in 1439 by Saint Macarius of Unzhensk. Built in stone in the second half of the XVII century. The history of the monastery is closely connected with the Romanov dynasty, especially the first of them - Mikhail Fedorovich, who together with his mother, the nun Marfa, visited the monastery several times. Saint Macarius - the first Saint, glorified for all-Russian veneration during the reign of the Romanovs. One of the abbots of the monastery was Saint Mitrofan, the first Bishop of Voronezh (in schema - Makariy). Currently, there are two active churches in the monastery out of five. The number of brothers - seven people.
