Former palaces and Arab mansions along the twisting streets of Stone Town hint at a grander age for this port city on the western coast of Zanzibar. The Old Fort, built in the 1700s to fend off the Portuguese, now hosts local performances, a café and an art gallery. Overstuffed bazaars lend an air of nonstop bustle. Mafia Island Marine Park sits just offshore, a haven for snorkeling the local reefs. Day tours visit working plantations where the island's legendary spices are grown.

We stayed for 8 nights (May 25-June 2) and enjoyed all facets that the hotel and Stone Town had to offer. We were under a Guest of Honor booking and upgraded to a beautiful suite with a wonderful view of the water. The view was stunning at sunset but also to watch how the locals use the beach. The entire staff – front desk, experience managers, security guards, pickup driver, housekeeping and restaurant staff were as friendly and helpful as we have experienced anywhere in the world – true hospitality. The hotel is historic and is very picturesque. Great location and easy walk to everything in Stone Town. Breakfast buffet was excellent with plenty of variety and cooked to order egg station. Dinners were excellent too. The hotels recommendations for additional dining were spot on, as were their recommendations for a traditional Stone Town dinner with amazing city view and traditional local music/dance at Emerson on Hurimzi. They actaully don’t have much beach at high tide but a nice pool is always available.

A Unique experience awaits at the Tembo House&Apartments.Tembo House Hotel&Apartments is situated at the heart of Zanzibar Stone Town by the picturesque seafront. The magnificent main Building has had various functions over the past centuries. Between 1834 and 1884 it served as the American Consulate in Zanzibar then passed on to become the trading offices of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners. Their headquarters was in Aden(what now is know as the Port of Suez), and with trading posts notably in most of the British Protectorate areas, it became the largest trading Company in the India Ocean. To this day , the name of Cowasjee Dinwash & Partners is still visible at the main entrance of Tembo House Hotel.Tembo House Hotel has seen a few celebrities pass through is doors during the consulate era, the Conwasjee Dinwash era and as a Hotel. Mahatma Ghandi, stayed here a few weeks with the Dinwash family on his journey back to India from South Africa 1930. As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home
We stayed in the annex building of Tembo Hotel. The room was very spacious and there were two queen size beds. The bathroom was a really good size too. They provide all the facilities like iron, hairdryer, kettle, tea/coffee, sugar and water bottles every day. The room was very clean and the maids that came to clean everyday did a fantastic job. The breakfast was amazing there was so much variety from fresh juices, fruits, waffles, your choice of eggs and traditional Tanzanian food. We also had lunch and dinner which was really tasty and a good portion size. The beach was only few minutes away and it was beautiful. The location was vey central to many restaurants, shops and Foordhani Park. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Double Tree in May 2022 for two weeks. The room was beautiful and was cleaned to a very high standard every day. Where do I start with the staff? Everyone was amazing and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Alex the chef was wonderful and spent time discussing the local food with us. The waiters were great: Francis, Yohana, Ismail, Mariam, Vitus, Safia, Juma to name a few. Management took time out to check in with us to see if we were happy with everything as did the executive housekeeper. Big thanks to Nora for showing me where the pool was. Will we come again? Definitely! Many thanks from Marvel and Veronica.

Mizingani Seafront Hotel is located on the Forodhani water front next to the Sultan Palace Museum and Ferry Terminal. Being in the heart of Stone Town, we are a stone throw away from the main tourist attractions, the Palace Museum, House of Wonders, Old Fort and the famous Forodhani food market. The Mizingani building is a very unique historical building which was constructed for newly married Royal couples for their honeymoon in 1865. Later in 1928 the house was then turned into the Custom House but, due to poor maintenance it deteriorated and finally had to be evacuated. This former Palace is now restored to its former glory with unique pieces of antique furniture, four poster beds, clocks, cupboards and so on, marvelously decorated and designed to make you feel like a Sultan. Mizingani Seafront Hotel provides the best facilities to offer with access of a lift, free wi-fi, air conditioning, 24 hour help desk, safe deposits and a perfect place to relax and tan near the swimming pool in the courtyard. Mizingani now boasts of large individually styled rooms, with ocean front or swimming pool balconies equipped with all modern facilities such as flat screen TV, cable channels, tea/coffee making facilities, hamam bathrooms tiled with Mosaic, hair dryers, high water pressure and hot water. Enjoy the evening cup of tea at our Ocean Front Restaurant while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean and dine under the sky at night. With environment being in our thoughts and conscious, we are proud to announce that we are the only hotel in Stone Town using solar panels for "Hot Water" usage in the hotel including all of our rooms. Create your own memory for a lifetime at Mizingani Seafront Hotel by experiencing the true Zanzibari Hospitality
Hotel is extremely noisy, on the top floor you get woken up by the plates in the kitchen on the first floor. People walking in the hallways and up the stairs keeps you awake. Only a few rooms have sea view. I requested for an additional pillow from reception which never came. People will force you to pay for parking however there is parking for hotel guests. We booked on Booking.com and still when we checked in we need to pay city tax.

Upon checking in, there was some confusion with our reservation. This was sorted out quickly by Mr Kurwa. Thereafter it was pure bliss. Extremely neat and clean hotel, friendly staff, awesome food. Ask Mr Suleiman at the front door for any help or directions. This is definitely the base from which to explore Stone Town.
