6 Museums in Tarnow That You Shouldn't Miss

The Seat of the District Museum in Tarnów is located in a town house at the Market Square in Tarnów. This building contains: the Art Department, the Administration Department, the Financial Department and the directorate. On the ground floor and in the basement, there are exhibition rooms where temporary exhibitions are presented.

The Ethnographic Museum, Department of the District Museum in Tarnów, has been functioning in its present seat since 1984. This is a classical and historical manor house with old garden and two-floor granary built at the end of the 18th century. The beginnings of the Museum’s operations were based on a small ethnographic collection which currently consists of more than 5,000 items. Among them, the most prominent ones are the exhibits that characterise the traditional folk culture of the Tarnów region. Apart from the exhibits mentioned above, the Museum collects items connected with the life and culture of the Romani. In 1990, the first in the world permanent exhibition devoted to the subject of the Romani was opened here. In the Museum’s yard, there is also a seasonal field exhibition installed called “The Gypsy Caravan”.

The gallery deals with the presentation of contemporary art; classics of Polish contemporary art, the most interesting phenomena of Polish art in recent years and the Tarnow artists' community.

In the “Panorama” Gallery located in the railway station building in Tarnow, a permanent exhibition is presented, devoted to the “Transylvanian Panorama” by Jan Styka and a team of painters under the direction of Jan Styka. This painting depicts the seizure of Sibiu by the Hungarians led by Gen. Jozef Bem on 11th March 1849. This painting was created in 1897, ordered by the Hungarians, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian uprising against the Austrians in 1848-49.

Hall of Memory of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers constitutes a branch of the History Department of the District Museum in Tarnow. In connection with preparations for renovation works, this Hall of Memory is closed to the public.
