6 Museums in El Calafate That You Shouldn't Miss

July 14, 2021 Concepcion Newsome

Building on its must-visit location, the once-tiny El Calafate has grown quickly to cater to and profit from the visitors to nearby Los Glaciares National Park. Many visit to see such natural wonders as Perito Moreno Glacier, a massive glacier that’s actually composed of many other pieces of shifting ice. Yet travelers will find that El Calafate is much more than merely a gateway to the Patagonian wild—it’s a fun town offering all sorts of outdoor adventures.

GLACIARIUM is a modern interpretive galciological centre, and one of the few Glacier Museums in the world. The understanding of glaciers and environmental awareness are our main subjects. The exhibits include models, dioramas, photographs, screens, interactive representations, a 3D documentary, and other modern resources that provide an enriching experience.

I would recommend visiting the Glaciarium before seeing the glaciers to get more insight on their awesomeness. It is extremely well done and informative. We had great fun in the ice bar which is worth a visit

El Calafate Historical Interpretation Center

History Exhibition Hall It is an exhibition about the natural and the human history in patagonia. you can see dinosaurs, big mammals and the history of the original people, the Aonikenk.

Although it's a bit far from the city center, it's worthy to visit if you want to have an idea of the rich history of this region. The museum has a timeline that accompanies you through all the rooms. It begins with an exposition of different kind of dinosaurs found in Patagonia and rebuilt by scientists. Then, it explains how human beings arrived to this remote place and what they left that let archaeologists and paleontologists know about their habits. Besides it tells how European colonized/invaded the place and treated native people as animals, a shameful history that unfortunately happened not only in Argentina but all along Latinamerica. The last room displays a collection of photos of native people and their sad stories, a wonderful reflection to appraise our American roots that make us different from the rest of the world.

Natural and archaeological reserve located 8 km from El Calafate. In this 4,000-year-old settlement, the residents captured rock paintings that we can still appreciate today. In addition to its cultural value, the flora and landscape are unbeatable. Native birds and animals also find refuge here. An ideal walk for lovers of nature and history.
