On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake happened. It was a magnitude 9.0–9.1 and the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. The earthquake triggered a powerful Tsunami that reached a maximum of 40.5 meters and traveled up to 10 km inland. At present, more than 15,000 people are counted as dead and over 2,500 people as still missing. Even worse, we lost control of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. On this tour, we visit the coastal area of Fukushima. We hope you can get a real perspective of the damage caused by the disaster and the effect it had on Fukushima. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and can have an important impact on your life.

Wonderful tour experiencing what has actually occurred, what are currently going on in Fukushima since the incidents. I went far beyond my expectation and could not be better. The well-experienced tour guide gave us much insight on top of what we saw and hear there. The 3-hour tour of damaged nuclear power plant which is not currently open for public would particularly be a highlight of this tour. Directly guided by staff of the power company with a Geiger counter hung from the neck of each one. Tours go around the area show us the unmanageable power of Tsunami and seriousness of the radioactive contamination.

Visit an Fukushima coast area on this interesting 2 day trip to Fukushima from Tokyo. See where the tsunami hit in 2011, and the former residential zones that are now abandoned and where people evacuated from due to nuclear power plant accident then come back there to rebuild their community. Travel to within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, damaged during the earthquake, but stay safe with the help and knowledge of your guide. In this tour, we can access Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

The guide was very informative which made me feeling safe the entire time. I liked the addition of other people from the area who told us about how their lives have changed since the disaster. The abandoned towns were so interesting. Everything was either frozen in time from the earthquake with the dishes still spilled off shelves, or taken back by nature. It was also nice though to see the community being rebuilt. I definitely recommend this tour to anyone who likes to go a bit off the beaten path, or even those who want an excuse to get out of Tokyo for the day and see the Japanese countryside. Make sure to try one of the peaches, the Fukushima prefecture is well known for them!

Damaged by the nuclear accident, the number of residents became zero for a while in Katsurao Village. This area used to be prosperous in agriculture and stockbreeding until the disaster occurred, but all failed due to the radioactive contamination. Now that a decade has passed since the disaster, 400 residents have returned and successfully resumed farming and stock raising. Keeping such stories in mind, you can make an experience of the real process in Katsurao Village from harvesting vegetables to checking radiation with a guide all through the course. Interacting with local people, you will have warm relationship with them, which is not available in a city. At the end of this tour, you will be an expert in knowing the recovery from the nuclear accident with correct knowledge of radiation and of the process of checking food safety.

The coastal area, called 'Hama-dori' of Fukushima Prefecture, is quite a unique area in the world because a complex disaster, not only an earthquake and tsunami but also a nuclear accident hit there at the same time. What on earth happened there on March 11th, 2011? By viewing from the train along the coastal line with a local guide, you can learn about ongoing project towards the goal of decommissioning the reactor. First, you visit 'The East Japan Great Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum' to know about the disaster broadly. Next you will see the 'TEPCO Decommissioning Museum' which tells you about the steps from the occurrence of the accident to decommissioning the reactor. Lastly, you visit 'Naraha Remote Technology Development Center' where you can simulate an experience of cutting-edge technology. With correct knowledge of the nuclear power plant and the strength of local people who involved in decommissioning, a bright image of the future will be brought to you.
