Nearly crossing northern Italy from the Adriatic Sea westward, Emilia-Romagna gets its name from Via Emilia, the Rimini-to-Piacenza ancient Roman road it straddles. With a rich mix of age-old agriculture and modern industry, the region is home to many historic and cultural gems, both in its larger towns like Bologna, Modena and Ravenna, as well as in its many small hilltop villages. Of course, the region’s best offerings also include native culinary wonders like parmigiano cheese and tortellini.

Great place along the motorway A1 to the south. Basic accommodation, but clean and everything in good working order. But come early for breakfast (before 9AM) or your options are very limited. Staff is very friendly. Rooms are very quiet because it is a few 100 meters from the highway.

I was panicking a bit because, due to an international antiques convention, I couldn't find a last minute hotel in Parma for less that £400 for the 2 nights that I would be there. Then I came across the Rimmel Motel on Tripadvisor for 70 Euros per night. The man on reception didn't speak English so I used a translation app to email my urgent requirement and he kindly reserved my room. The Motel is on the side of a busy ring road with no means of getting anywhere safely on foot so you do need transport. However, the room was fantastic for the money. Larger than many hotel rooms it was very modern and clean with a good size double bed, the best pillows I've come across in a hotel room and a great bathroom with bidet and a large walk in shower. There was a large flat-screen TV, a fridge stocked with drinks and snacks (to pay for of course) and there was absolutely no road noise to keep me awake. The car was parked right outside the room and there was a service station right next door which I strolled to for coffee, pastries and sandwiches, which were freshly made from the supply of hams, salamis and cheeses inside. My room was bigger, better and more modern than that of a colleague who was staying in a central Parma hotel which was charging £400 for the same 2 night stay. I really would recommend staying at the Rimmel Motel if you have transport or if you don't mind ordering a taxi for the 10 minute drive into central Parma. Brilliant!
