Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum

Reviewed By permia

Unveiled and commencing its beaming of light in 1867, it was constructed on the site of a military fort. Buildings of the latter housed light keepers in the past. But since automation of the lighthouse the very good museum is now hosted within. With the Portuguese explorations of the seas worldwide, lighthouses became very important. This history is engagingly documented here.

Belem Lighthouse

Reviewed By permia

A fine construct with encirclings of bricks, we were a little disappointed to learn that it never served as a beacon for mariners. Actually built for the 1940 Portuguese World Exposition, it makes a distinctive landmark on the riverside. Very fittingly close to the Belem Tower and the Explorers' Monument.
