The Lugger Hotel

The Lugger is nestled at the foot of a valley with picturesque cove and tiny harbour. Portloe is part of the beautiful Roseland Peninsula, surrounded by cliffs and headlands which form part of the Cornish Coastal Footpath. The Lugger sits right at the water’s edge in the very heart of the village and has been recently transformed following a major renovation programme. All the public rooms have been refurbished and greatly improved to offer comfort and functionality in the truly unique setting of this historic harbour. Luxurious touches throughout have helped the hotel to gain multiple awards, The Lugger has been named ‘Best Seaside Hotel’ by The Sunday Times, has featured on the Condé Naste Travellers ‘Hot List’ and also features in the Mr and Mrs Smith and Hip Hotels guidebooks.

Staffing Issues

I have stayed at the Lugger in prior years and always enjoyed the high level of service and attention to detail , hence my return in May 2022. However I received an email the night before arrival explaining that we couldnt dine at the hotel on the first night as the restaurant was full. As Portloe is quite remote (there's only the Lugger and Ship Inn) I phoned the hotel only to be told that we couldnt have an evening meal for any of the 4 nights that we were staying. On arrival it was explained that they had lost 7 or 8 staff members, which I guess is quite a lot in a small hotel, and so could only accommodate you for dinner if you had pre-booked the bed, breakfast and dinner package in advance. Eventually we were allowed into the restaurant on one night - the food was good. The other days and nights we ate in St Mawes which is 20 minutes drive away and has some great hotels and restaurants. The Lugger had also cancelled lunch service, afternoon tea and refreshments during the day also and so we had to factor 'eating out' for lunch and dinner each day . We stayed in one of the premium rooms, the cottage, which was very nice but for £340 a night at a 5 star establishment, its disappointing as literally just a bed and breakfast. I was very annoyed and complained to the hotel manager, Gareth, who gave us a complimentary bottle of Freixenet which didnt really appease me. Next time Ill stay in St Mawes.

The Idle Rocks

The Idle Rocks has the most enviable location in St Mawes, overlooking the harbour with views across the River Fal to Falmouth. Our 18 bedrooms, most with stunning vistas over the bay, have been thoughtfully designed, each having their own unique identity with fabulous fabrics and decor that leave you in no doubt that you are by the sea. After a long day lazing on the beach, our south facing terrace is the perfect place to relax, have a long drink, and watch the world go by. You may even see your dinner being landed on the harbourside. The Idle Rock's restaurant, led by our Executive Head Chef, Dorian Janmaat, is a celebration of Cornwall; showcasing a range of fabulous produce that has been sourced locally using only seasonal fresh ingredients. In many cases it will have been swimming right on our doorstep only a few hours earlier and while the food is of the very highest standard our setting is very relaxed.

Not really up to expected standard

Our problem was really “the room” - we had Room 20 - which was not in the main building - but a separate building (which contained 3 rooms and entailed a short walk down the road - no pavement and past the public boat ramp). Beautifully furnished and kept clean - but in a very public environment. Yes - the harbour water lapped under the window - but when the tide was out there was also a lot of noise from the beach goers under the windows. Also - the basement of this separate building was used by the hotel for stores and trash - another source of unwelcome noise in early morning and late evening. The hotel’s service van often parked outside the room and when the van tail-lift was deployed - guess what - you had to walk over the slippery tail-lift minding the trash bins! Had the hotel explained this at time of booking we would have declined. The food was lovely but the service wasn’t snappy - and sometimes the staff were downright unhelpful. Not many seats for guests on the terrace - but empty tables on the terrace were laid for external diners - which the staff didn’t willingly release to hotel guests seeking a bar drink in the fresh air. Really difficult to recommend.

Ship and Castle

Where the Rivers' Fal and Percuil meet to join the open sea, St Mawes boasts the perfect picture postcard retreat and at the heart of the village, right on the quay you will find the Ship and Castle Hotel. Once The Ship and Castle Inn, and a warren of small fishermen's cottages (remnants of which can still be seen at the rear of the existing building) The Ship and Castle is now a 54 bedroom hotel with all the charm and character one would expect for its location. Our bar and lounges offer the perfect location for a peaceful day in St Mawes watching the world go by, or enjoying a traditional Cornish Cream Tea. We have a selection of sea view rooms which understandably are in high demand and are well recommended to make your stay that little bit more special.

Great location and good service

We stayed here on a Shearings break. We were happy with the hotel overall. Food was very good. The vegetarian options were as good and delicious as the meat/fish dishes. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. We raised a problem in our room, which was sorted out within minutes. The dining areas and bar have lovely views over the harbour, where the ferry docks. It is just a 20 minute boat trip to Falmouth. This is an old building with its peculiar quirks. There are a number of twists and turns to reach some rooms, but that is part of the charm. We used the stairs and beat the lift every time. Our room was comfortable and clean with snowy white linens. As we were on the second floor, the shower pressure was pretty poor, but it just took a bit longer. The bathroom is compact. The main concern was the Victory Inn pub next door. It was quiet until about 11pm, but then young people sat outside making a lot of noise until the small hours. On one evening the pub played loud music, even though they should have been shut. This is outside the hotel’s control. We had asked for a quiet room and we could not hear any noise from inside the hotel, just the pub. The answer is to take some ear plugs or make sure that you have a room away from the pub side. This would not put us off staying here again, as we had an enjoyable time, despite the noisy pub.

St Mawes Hotel

Set alongside the harbour, in the heart of the village, St Mawes Hotel has a lively and informal feel, without compromising on taste and style. The warmth of the team, beautifully designed rooms, lively bar restaurant and terrace makes the luxury sea view hotel a place that will draw locals and visiting guests back time and time again. The seven bedroom boutique hotel has bright and airy luxurious guestrooms. Decorated by owner Karen Richards, the interiors will capture the nautical views of the village and harbour. Each room echoes Karen's signature style, a marriage between traditional coastal culture and contemporary design. All front facing rooms offer spectacular sea views and look out over the harbour. The Upper Deck Restaurant at St Mawes Hotel is a convivial escape to enjoy authentic quality dishes that will showcase the best locally sourced Cornish ingredients. Menu options include both smaller and larger dishes based on the wonderful produce from the sea, alongside stone baked pizzas and daily specials. Alfresco tables provide an idyllic location to make the most of sunny days and enjoy the spectacular views of the water. Guests staying at the St Mawes Hotel will appreciate the comfortable lounge, complete with compact library and log wood fire place for cosy winter days, with nautical inspired interiors and unspoilt views of the harbour. The addition of the Courtyard Private Dining and events space as well as an intimate 25-seat Hidden Cinema completes the package of a wonderful place to celebrate and create special memories.

lovely little gem

this little place is truly worth a visit, the rooms are amazing and very comfortable, the view from the restaurant is amazing, the down side are having to pay for parking in the local car park. The food is expensive and when your missing parts to your meal its not good, the waitress apologised but no recompence or replacemment offered Breakfast buffet is hit and miss the items do not go together, advertised as cheeses and meats which equates to one type of cheese cut into triangles and some salami mo bread or crackers though there was butter !!! We did have an issue with the coffe and milk not being replenshed during our stay, and eventually we got some milk from the restaurant, too be told they had an issue getting milk for the rooms, which is ok but would of been nice to have known when we awere waiting for our morning coffee. However do not let that put you off it is a lovely hotel close to the estuary and ferry over to Falmouth

Lynwood House Bed & Breakfast

Lynwood House has been a bed and breakfast for many years and was taken over by Abigail and Jeremy Merrick in 2008. They welcome you most warmly and are open all year. Lynwood House has twin and double rooms available. Three of these are situated in the main house and all have en-suite with shower, basin and loo. Additionally this year, luxury self contained accommodation is available in the studio. The very spacious bedroom and open plan living area has a generous en-suite with separate shower, bath, basin, bidet and loo.Bedrooms either overlook Tregony valley or the south facing garden; they are modestly decorated with country cottons and comfortably furnished. Each room has Wifi, a television with Freeview / DVD player, hairdryer, radio alarm clock, a wide selection of teas and coffees, and a mini fridge for fresh milk. Guests will enjoy soft sheets, fluffy bath towels and hopefully a good night’s rest. Ironing board and iron is available on request. A delicious breakfast will be served on the long dining room table (Abigail is a Leith’s trained chef). You will be offered a continental breakfast Monday to Friday at 8.15am, and a full English cooked breakfast everyday at 9.15am. Vegetarians will be happily catered for if Abigail is advised on booking. Guests who are booked into the studio have the additional option of enjoying a continental breakfast laid out in their room, to have at their leisure. Lynwood House is not licensed, however the local pub and off-license are just up the road so your stay need not be teetotal. For evening meals there are some excellent pubs locally, one in walking distance and others only a few minutes drive away. The local fish and chip van parks up in the square on a Friday and Saturday night. You are most welcome to enjoy the garden during the day and sit on the sunny terrace for tea, coffee or a glass of wine (if you bring your own). Lynwood House is situated near the Fal river at the very edge of Tregony village. Historically, Tregony is known as the 'gateway to the Roseland.' The river is a popular place for bird watchers and there are some lovely riverside and woodland walks in the area. Well known for its countryside and quiet beaches, the peninsula has impressive coastal and river scenery and picturesque villages. Ultimately this road reaches the sea and St Mawes, a one time fishing village which is now a picturesque little harbour full of sailing boats. There are boat trips to various destinations and a passenger ferry that crosses regularly to Falmouth on the other side of the Fal estuary. Apart from enjoying the wonderful countryside, swimming in the pretty coves and lazing on the local beaches there is lots to do in Cornwall. The well known surfing beaches on the north coast are not far from Tregony, you can ride, bike, picnic, explore and above all relax.

A fantastic stay, in a beautiful location.

The village of Tregony is in a tranquil location, a short hop to attractions and main routes, with a local pub for evening meals. Lynwood House is spotlessly clean with all facilities you would expect. The hosts are very friendly, super helpful and cannot do enough for you - and the breakfast was fantastic - What more could you ask for. We will definitely be back.

Great location and hosts. They were welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. A variety of breakfast options available. A lovely and clean room with a lovely view over the fields. It would be a great location for a couple or family. We were given great recommendations for places to visit, we would recommend Carne beach and St. Mawes. We would recommend the B&B to everyone and looking forward to coming back again.
