This hotel is directly across from the pyramids and Jebel Barkal; you can walk from the hotel up the mountain in the morning to catch sunrise over the area. The hotel is well-appointed and has a beautiful, well-maintained courtyard. The brick rooms are lovely and comfortable. The Italian Tourism Company can arrange trips from here to the tombs, petrified forest, and pyramids. The loveliness of the hotel came as quite a surprise after driving through the agricultural and desert areas to get there. Would be a great place to spend a few days.

Huge rooms (more like suites), good air-con, and clean. WiFi didn’t work. Breakfast leaved a bit to be desired, but it was adequate. Quite a large complex, looked like it was built to be a major tourist resort, but didn’t quite pan out. Nonetheless, an adequate place to rest your head for the night.

If you're in Wadi Halfa, you're probably overlanding and have no other choice but to stay there while you wait for the Ferry. How you rate Kilopatra Hotel depends on how you look at it. If you're driving Cape to Cairo on a very small budget (as we had been doing), you're used to sleeping in crappy hotels and possibly won't find the legendary Kilopatra Hotel that bad. If you're driving Cairo to Cape Town you're still fresh and haven't yet experienced some of the dodgy hotels on the route - which could make your stay there nightmarish. Either way, there aren't many other options in town so you'll just have to make do. A tip for female travellers: if you have to use the shower, and you happen to have long hair - wet your hair, lather with shampoo, place over your face and then take a shower. The smell of your shampoo will help counter the smell of the long-drop. Anyway, enjoy - it's an experience!

Prison cell room, ants and cockroaches everywhere, shower head directly above the squat toilet means the wonderful smells rise up when shower water heads down. A truly memorable place, I will do well to find worse.

Nilkatarakt.
