Mfangano Island Lodge is in Kenya, on Mfangano Island, in Lake Victoria. In a secluded bay, on the northern coast of the island, among ancient fig trees and huge boulders. The lush hillside and lodge surrounds are abundant with indigenous plants and flowers.
Great Easter weekend. Mfangano is an amazing island. The staff were great and the rooms really fun. There are not many activities and ideas from staff are hard to come by. If you just want quiet and relaxation it is amazing. If you want action then bring a kayak or a fishing rod to amuse yourself. The village tour was really educational and th sunset hill is a must! Would be back again. Lovely introduction to the island.

Fantastic place. Lovely and so close to the beautiful hills of Nyamanga and the great lake. Went for å walk to Gembe hill with Mida, the lokal guide. It was fantastic. Good food and service. Ibrahim, the manager is a really cool and nice guy who has lived in several different African counries. The area itself is somewhere definatly worth visiting.

Beach Resort on the shores of Lake Victoria in the historic Rusinga Island
Though the water is high at this moment the beach is lovely and swimming there is fantastic ( Just check with the crew if the Hippos are around. I saw the Otter two times while there. Here is good food, especially i enjoyed the Pilau. The rooms are nice, i slept well lystenning to the powerful sounds of the lake. I had online classes and the wifi worked well and the crew made sure to cater and find for me and find the best sitting places. Overall the crew is also very friendly and talkative. The location is beutiful by the lake looking at a beutiful island. Here you will experience a different world.

The place is awesome. You get a good view of the lake. The staff are really great and friendly. The rooms were stuffy and mouldy and they served us stale food for breakfast and we had stomach upset. They can improve on that, it is really a cosy affordable place.

I do not think I could have anticipated the kind of place this was. Over the phone and agent bookings were OK, we settled our payments OK. The nightmare began with the access to the place, it was farther from Mbita than we had been made to believe. The easiest way to access it was actually by boda boda which was just an indicator of how bad the road to the place is. The room we were assigned - no words! The roof was leaking, some ceiling boards were missing. The cleanliness was so bad, and so glaring, it was shocking. The food was supposedly to be made organic and on order. I think we waited for more than one and a half hours the first night after being promised a fifteen minutes wait. We had to eat in our rooms which had no comfortable seating because there is no eating place. The windows were not well closing so the number of mosquitoes, lake flies and other bugs that were getting in the food and the room was just jarring. The power went off at some point while we were eating, and it took so long to bring us lights, all the while being misled about the generator coming on (I don't think it ever did). Rubina kept saying that the mosquitoes were lake flies, while they were busy biting. That was just our first night. It went downhill from there. Breakfast was not up to par, nothing to speak of with promises of if we came back, there would be better fruits etc. Through Rubina, we booked a trip round the island lakes. She spoke of it as a very safe, very shielded boat and convinced us to lay a premium fee for the ride. Going to the lake, we found a fishing boat fresh from omena fishing with some very dirty life saving jackets. It was an indigenous experience which we didn't have a problem with other than the misrepresentation and lies that it was packaged as. Overall, I think we would have been more amenable if Rubina, the manager/owner would have just been honest. The lies about everything, whether the food, the bugs, the power, the boat, the rooms etc left a very bad taste. Those intending to book need to take what Rubina says with a pinch of salt (or two). Don't go with young kids at all, the journey to the place and the sleeping conditions will not do. It is not a place I would go back to (or recommend someone else to) unless the full potential of the location is realised and better professional management is put in place.

Originally I was going to give this hotel only 1 star and a very scathing review. The reason for this was that the room we were given had the following problems. A TV which did not work A fan that could not be connected to a power socket, being that it was 2 pronged and the sockets are 3. Only 1 towel given for 2 people. But, Diana, a member of the staff could see how upset I was and did her upmost to rectify the problems. Diana undertook to correct all the problems whilst we went for dinner. As such I have no problem in giving this hotel 5 stars (mainly because of the helpfulness of Diana.) Hurray, for Diana.
