The E-80 across Turkey is a very, very long road. Fortunately, in the vast expanse of wild landscape (about a third of the way between Istanbul and Erzurum) is the Akbak Otel. Not only were they friendly and welcoming to a couple of unannounced, weary guests at 10.30pm - but the room we were offered was clean, tidy and comfortable. The brochure in the room told us all about the area (close to Safranbolu, in the Karabuk region) and the hotel's 'negative ion salt therapy' room. In fact, much of the hotel's decoration is based on rock salt: make sure you buy some from Reception before you leave (the market next door doesn't have anywhere near as good a range)! The bed was comfy; the bathroom was clean; the shower was powerful. Despite being on a petrol station forecourt, there was hardly any noise overnight. And, the air conditioning worked so well that we actually had to turn it off! Breakfast was a decent spread: bread, fresh simit and the usual jams, (local organic) honey, cheese, salad etc - along with chips & boiled eggs. There was nothing particularly ground-breaking, but there was plenty of everything, it was all fresh and good quality, and the breakfast room was clean and tidy. Overall, we would recommend it. It's a shame we didn't get to use the facilities or explore the area more, so we'll probably go back and we'd be happy to stay here again.

The hotel is located on the highway in Çankırı to the direction of Ilgaz Skiing Area. Many skiers prefer to stay at the hotel due to an easy access to the skiing area as well as its lower price comparing to the hotels' prices at the mountain. They can offer the bed and breakfast or half board stay. They serve the dinner at the restaurant next to the hotel. It is not a luxury hotel but the staff is very helpful.

English speaking and very friendly staff. Location, food and quality of Wi-Fi was amazing. Free private parking is available. Room was big, clean and comfortable, but little bit of old furnismet. Bathroom needs to be upgrade.
