Our hotel is the ideal place for nature lovers. We are strategically located inside the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge, bordering the San Carlos River. We have 15 Bungalows and 8 tree houses of approximately 45 m2, equipped with: hot water (through solar panels), private bathroom, ceiling fan, open closet, balcony with a beautiful view to a natural lagoon or to the forest for the tree houses, where you can relax in a hammock while reading a book or just enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature. We have 68 acres of rainforest, within which we have trails for you to enjoy alone or with one of our guides. There is a great variety of flora and fauna, making this the perfect place for bird lovers. Currently, we have identified more than 592 species of birds.
Lots to do and see. You must get a treehouse. Shower opens to the tree canopy 75 feet up. No bugs. Food excellent. Staff are delightful. Night walk is a must with Jose. He sees everything, knows everything and is super informative. Forest walk also incredible. Spider monkeys swinging overhead. You will wake up hearing howler monkeys and last night as we sat out at dusk we were entertained by two Tucans. Full NatGeo experience. We will be back.

Come and experience an "Off The Beaten Track" Tropical Rainforest Adventure. Located approximately 150 km from San Jose, we are surrounded by 500 hectares rain forest. The lodge is secluded and cozy with an open-view restaurant. For your enjoyment we offer: canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, boat tours, bird watching/photography and free WiFi.
Had an enjoyable 2 night stay there. Went specifically to see the king vulture and had one visit the feeding blind after an almost 3 hr wait. Thought a shower would discourage the visit but one came. In the meantime the antics of the numerous black vultures kept us entertained. Plus, mealy parrots and other interesting birds added to the scene. Appreciated the varied birdlife on the grounds of the lodge seeing pied puffbirds, becards, barbthroats, and flycatchers not to mention toucans, parrots and others at the main feeder. A not-so-shy coati enjoyed the fruit. Spotlighting the lagoons near the driveway resulted in seeing two caimans with one about 4 ft in length. The last 20 kilometers or so to the lodge is quite bumpy but made for enjoyable birding including our first striped cuckoo! Our accommodations were fine. The ceiling fan made for good sleeping. Food was tasty. The staff quickly prepared an excellent chicken dish for my wife once our guide realized she did not eat seafood. The beer was cold. Yes, be prepared for rain. It was interesting that staff changed the horizontal limb at the main feeder so that moss and leaves made for a more naturally setting for photographing birds before they ventured to the center of the feeder where fruit was attached. Brown-hooded parrots were a main attractions at one time being a few feet from the porch and undoubtedly resulted in 100's of pics being taken by one group. Laguna del Lagarto is a wonderful place to bird. Staff could not have been more pleasing. The rough road is more than worth the trip.

We spent three nights at the Pedacito de cielo in one of their bungalows. At the restaurant there were several feeding stations where we saw parrots, toucans and many other birds of all colours. In the trees we saw monkeys and iguanas. We went on an interesting guided walk in their own rain forest, where again we saw lots of animals and got to know intersting things about the plants that grow there. On a boat trip to the Nicaraguan border we saw crocodiles, basilisks, birds and other animals. Dining and breakfast at their restaurant was simple, but freshly made and very nice. One of the nicest places we stayed at during our 4 week's trip of Costa Rica.

We stayed at Iguanitas Lodge for two nights and enjoyed every minute. The rooms are clean and spacious, sufficient parking space is available and the couple running the hotel is very nice and helpful (They don't speak English, so you should know basic Spanish words). We also booked a day trip by boat on the Rio San Carlo to the village Boca San Carlo with a walking tour through wonderful rainforest in the afternoon. We had dinner at the hotel as well which was really delicious. The highlight is the hut where you have breakfast (and dinner) accompanied with hummingbirds, woodpeckers, akaris and parrots. Thanks for the two nights, I highly recommend this place!
