I won a weekend trip to Kuzuko Lodge with my family. To be honest that was a good thing because I'm not sure I would have chosen to visit this place otherwise. Somehow eastern cape is more connected to garden route and the sea than game drives in my mind. But boy, was I wrong! Kuzuko Game Reserve is one of the prettiest parks I've seen. Not only you get to see a lot of animals, and you definetly do, but you really enjoy yourself while driving because of the gorgeous scenery.

We had a 2 night stay at River Bend Lodge Addo. Staff Profesional, attentive and friendly. Good birding and game viewing. Great field guides, good food and comfortable accommodation. Nyathi conservancy offers many varieties of terrain and different biomes.

The incomparable thrill of quietly observing a passing herd of elephant while being served tea on the veranda of a stately Colonial manor house is the stuff of dreams and legends. This exclusive safari lodge recaptures the romantic mystique of authentic safari of centuries past - the awesome natural world of Africa merged with colonial nostalgia and modern sophistication to deliver an unforgettably unique 5 star adventure. Gorah is a member of Relais & Chateaux.
I spent 2 nights at Gorah Elephant Camp during May 2022 and it was a 5 star experience. The accommodation in a giant “tent” was absolute luxury with a comfortable bed, ensuite shower and separate toilet, a sitting area inside and outside on a deck. There were 2 gas heaters at either end for the cool nights and even a hot water bottle in your bed. The lodge was an old colonial house with a view from the verandah and the breakfast deck of the waterhole and a large grassy area where herds of elephant and zebra would come to drink and graze. All the meals were delicious and plentiful with accompanying wines. Every morning and evening we were taken out on game drives. There was no shortage of elephants and my expert guide, Justin, made sure I was able to get up close and personal to them - bulls, family groups, cute babies. Justin was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and entertaining and worked hard to show us as much wildlife as possible. He even succeeded in tracking down the 5 resident lions. One evening as twilight turned to dark, we followed them as they walked along the road right beside our vehicle. It was a magic experience.

Zuurberg Mountain Village is a haven of historical delight surrounded by wildlife and nature. Located high up on the spectacular Zuurberg Pass, it is a peaceful & truly unique mountain top retreat offering a variety of accommodation. Set in 160 hectares of indigenous vegetation, with breath taking views overlooking the Addo Elephant National Park, this 150-year-old hotel offers her guests elegance, style and quality. Equipped to international standards, the rooms ensure high levels of comfort, whilst gourmet food, friendly staff & a myriad of outdoor activities all add up to one thing – a stay to remember. An immense stone fireplace dominates the high-ceiling, gracious lounge where aperitifs are enjoyed around a log fire on chilly winter evenings. French doors lead to the pool where alfresco dining is enjoyed on balmy summer evenings. The cottages are arranged so that one can enjoy both the spectacular mountain and valley views.
Zuurberg is a beautiful hotel with a lot of authentic historical decor. That said, in modern times, there are a number of facilities/service levels that need to be met. The team there, from Barbara that greets you and check you in, to the waiter team are exceptional and really attentive. The rooms were large and well equipped with a real homely feeling to them. The food at both breakfast and dinner was exceptional (although some of the equipment needs an upgrade) Some items that pull down the overall experience: 1. The road up to the hotel is a challenge and unpleasant. It isn't in the hotels control but makes going out on excursions unpleasant as you have 20-30min of poor dirt road in and out each time. 2. Lunch - we didn't get lunch before our game drive as the kitchen was overwhelmed, the number of chefs was insufficient 3. wifi - its free and works in the main building, but at the village (stand alone chalets), there is no wifi, a problem if your a tourist without data 4. no TV in the room, however this is often the case in game reserves to keep you focused on the experience 5. no hot water - the geyser apprently trips regularly and most of the guests at breakfast didn't have hot water. 6. Game drive - its very cold in the evenings and the blankets provided are very thin. Something like a Snuggle blanket would help. 7. I would put extra milk in the room, there is only enough for one round of tea/coffee 8. the aircon (for heating) was very noisey and didn't cope

A brilliant place to stay. Much quieter than Addo National Park itself (which we visited for a half day game drive, organised by the Lodge). We stayed for a couple of nights and had a great time, particularly the elephant walk, lounging by the pool, and watching giraffes from the outdoor shower. Food was fantastic, and the staff were all really helpful and friendly.
