With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

We found ourselves stranded at 7 pm due to a vicasa.com last-minute booking cancellation up at the Taos Ski Area, which turned out to be one of the best things that have happened so far on our 2 month road trip from Ontario. Rather than some sterile place in the middle of nowhere, we landed in the heart of Arroyo Seco, right next to a great coffee shop and natural food store. Subra was very accommodating figuring out how he could give us the best possible deal on our week-long stay, and we had a large, very clean room with a big super-comfortable bed - and good pillows! - not those cheap hotel types. There's a well equipped communal kitchen with a long dining table, coffee and even a regular re-supply of oat milk. The indoor "courtyard" style public area, with a second floor balcony around it, is a really nice place to hang out. Everyone we met at the hostel were friendly and interesting, this is the real deal, not like some "hostels" that are bottom-of-the-line crash pads, this is the traditional European style place where young and old travelers mingle and exchange stories in a cozy, clean and friendly place. This is hands down the best place to stay if you're in the area, just 8 miles north of Taos.

We were really looking forward to checking in to this "international hostel", but our first impression was that it really wasn't much like any hostels we'd ever stayed at before. Not a fun HI young friendly traveler vibe, they wanted CASH only, and wouldn't even allow us to see a room unless we paid up in full first. Had to go find a bank to withdraw some cash but by that time my partner who had stayed behind started feeling uncomfortable about the whole idea, lots of rules like having to do housekeeping chores or you don't get your key deposit back, etc., so we hit the road to find somewhere else to stay. Might be a good choice for some low budget travelers, but not for us.

We are a dorm style hostel in Silver City, New Mexico, designed with hikers, cyclists, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts in mind, but all travelers are welcome! We offer several different room accommodations (private rooms, bunks, and tenting) and have the most affordable rates in the area. Come relax and enjoy your stay in historic, wonderful Silver City!
Super close to the historic downtown the hostel has private rooms, mine was basically an apartment in the rear with all cooking utensils provided and then a communal area to meet greet and watch TV. The host Brendon allowed me to secure my motorcycle on the property behind the high wooden fence (stockade) which was much appreciated. Oh and the price is the best deal by far in Silver City

Near Roberts Lake and Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument
I am mad at myself. I made a poor decision when I decided to stay at the Breath Inn on the way to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I had a chance to stay at a chain motel in Silver City but I decided for just a few dollars more to get a promised suite at the Breath Inn. Prior to arriving I had called and spoke to the owner via telephone. He first told me a double room was sixty some dollars. When I told him we were a family of two adults and three children he told me we would have to get a suite and that would be $119.00. I told him the children could sleep on the floor on air mattresses (as they have for the last two weeks). The man replied the rooms were way too small and he was right! When I later called to ask about what kind of room that would be an older female answered and told me she was not sure. A younger female then took the call and advised there would be two full beds and a queen in two rooms. The price would now be $122.00 and that was tax and everything. At the time of the last call I was sitting in front of the Econo Lodge in Sliver City. That room with two double beds on the second floor would have been $102 with tax. That included a hot breakfast and the place had phone, fridge, and pool. I decided to take a chance. What a mistake that was. We arrived at the Breath Inn and walked in the Lobby / restaurant. We waited for a few moments and the waitress who must have doubled as a desk clerk came to the desk. As she checked us in I asked about the Wi-Fi and she had no idea of what I was talking about. When I asked about how to access the Internet signal she said she did not know if there was an Internet signal. Then she told me she had to go and check if the water heater for the room was turned on. That was a real bad sign. Finally she went to ask the man who appeared to be the owner where the remote for the TV was. Yes, they keep the remotes for the TVs in the office in little cubby holes like the old motels used to keep mail and keys in. During this time I was able to have some drama as the owner berated the waitress/desk clerk for not taking wine to some people who were waiting on the wine and salad at their table. I think it was poor judgment to do that in front of not only my child and I, but the couple of people who were also at the desk deciding if they would stay or not. By the way they purchased can drinks at the reasonable price of $1.00 and left without a room. The owner then proceeded to check us in with a rate of $131.00 I protested that I had been told the total would be $122.00 by the girl on the phone. The owner told me that I spoke to him first and that $131.00 was the price. I was going to argue but I did not want to drive back to Silver City. I then asked about the procedure of how to login to the network and the man said he had told me on the phone. I said no, do you have a login or password or is the network open access. He then replied the network was open, which I like. However the man was surly and not very friendly. We went to our room. I did not like the rooms. They seemed dated and worn. At least there was no phone to disturb us as the rooms did not have phones. Also forget the ice machine as there were no ice buckets in the rooms. I did get my hopes up when I saw the little wooden enclosure that apparently held the room fridge. I was shocked when I opened it and found a small water heater with the inspection plate sitting off to the side exposing live electrical contacts. I am pretty sure that fails the kid or pet safe standards. The sagging ceiling gave the place a creepy feel like a no tell motel. Also I reckon it is easier to put a second Curtin rod holder up if the first breaks. Our curtain appeared to be almost at its failure point as the rod hung precariously. When I checked the air conditioner at about 8:00 P.M. to see why the room was warmer than the outside I found what appeared to be a used band aid on the air conditioner filter. However all was not lost. As my wife watched the 70’s show on the small TV I felt as though I was in the studio audience due to the 70’s type motif in the room See the attached pictures for documentation. If anyone finds anything they disagree with in this review please contact me and I will discuss it. I just had a crappy experience here and the Breath Inn is the type of place that puts you in the position of staying there or driving a very long time to find lodging. In my opinion work needs to be done on the rooms along with the attitude and knowledge of the staff.

After a rather challenging day I was driving up to Cloudcroft to try and find a campsite. As I watched the temperatures dropping, I drove past the hostel. I walked in to find one other person already there cooking dinner which was a welcome sight to see. Stephanie soon came down to greet me and get me sorted out. She was especially accommodating considering I had no reservation and had not called before. I found the beds in the female dorm extremely comfortable, and the thermostat on the wall kept the room at a great temperature. The next morning I had plans to continue my road trip towards Carlsbad Caverns, but upon waking found myself not wanting to get out of bed. So I didn’t. I had a wonderful lazy day and Stephanie was exceptionally accommodating in this regard as well. Overall, this was one of the best, if not THE best hostel I’ve ever stayed in including numerous trips to Europe.
