Bodegas Cruz Conde is located in the very center of Andalusia, concretely in Montilla-Moriles wine region (Córdoba). The wines produced here are those with high alcohol content, commonly called "vinos generosos" (generous wines). They are of the same type as in Sherry region, but due to the terroir differences Montilla-Moriles wines have their own very special character. The winery was founded in 1902 by Don Rafael Cruz Conde, the army commandant from a famous cordovan family. Already in 1925 Bodegas Cruz Conde was recognized on the national level, as the king of Spain Alfonso XIII named it Official Supplier of the Royal House. Among all the wineries of the D.O. Montilla-Moriles this is the only one which has a subterranean cellar ("El sótano") for its wines aging. This unique underground cellar along with other important parts of the winery can be visited during the guided tour&tasting.

Alvear is the oldest winery in Andalusia, founded in 1729 by Don Diego de Alvear y Escalera. Eight generations later, the family business owns 200 hectares of vineyards where the pedro ximenez grapes grow. Among the many awards and distinctions, is the most current that Robert Parker has awarded the PX Harvest 2011, also highlights the Award for "Best Tourist Company 2008" from Cordoba.
Visited as part of a coach excursion to Montilla. Winery is still in private family ownership (currently eighth generation) and is the second oldest in Spain. Our guide went into great detail about their winemaking before moving on to the best part of the visit - the tasting rooms! We enjoyed three or four different wines/fortified wines (sherry). In this region they make white and fortified wines (they’ve another winery near Portugal for reds) and have to admit we were both surprised at the fantastic taste and quality. There’s a sales area and they did very well from our group - one of my purchases was a small bottle of Amontillado which is destined for my suitcase and home to UK. If I visited again then I think I’d forgo the tour and head directly to the tasting area (tickets can be purchased separately).
