Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

Entering its 22nd year, there are ten stages where the top DJs and dance acts will be performing for over 60,000 fans. We spent the week in Amsterdam during last year's (2019) Pride festival and can honestly say the whole event was absolutely amazing, especially the Saturday canal parade. On the day of the parade, the whole city got involved in some way and partied from early morning onwards. We found ourselves a spot on Prinsengracht canal a good hour before the first of the floats were due to arrive, which proved a very wise move as if we'd left it later we wouldn't have been able to see anything. We moved on to the Amstel later in the afternoon but the crowds were so huge we wished we'd hadn't moved from our original place. We enjoyed it so much we're tempted to visit again in 2020.

Annually, Amsterdam Light Festival transforms Amsterdam’s city centre into a 53-day light art exhibition. Tailor-made art pieces and installations by contemporary (international) artists, designers, and architects light up the inner city. The light artworks can be admired by boat, by bike, or on foot. You can do this on your own initiative or by booking a tour with one of the official festival partners.
