When you think of South Africa’s Big Five, you probably imagine lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and water buffalos. In Overstrand, down the coast from Cape Town, the Big Five are all marine creatures. About 1,800 African penguins (also known as jackass penguins for their loud shouts) roost just offshore on rocky Dyer Island, while on much smaller Geyser Island there’s a colony of 60,000 Cape fur seals. Cruising the narrow channel between them are toothy great white sharks looking for their next meal. (If you’re brave, outfitters can lower you down in a cage to see them up close.) Rounding out the Big Five, Southern right whales and bottlenose dolphins can be spotted from shore May to December.

Hornbill House is in the small village of Hemel en Aarde Village between Hermanus and Onrus. Hornbill House has self-catering accommodation apartments with a restaurant next door, making it a bountiful place to visit. There are 6 units for guests to choose from.
We only stayed one night but the place is so spacious, has everything we you might need if you wanted to stay longer and self cater. Location is great for Hemel and Aarde wine router and wine village restaurants. The decor and the artwork is also fun to look at.

The Windsor Hotel and Self-Catering Apartments, a 120km drive from Cape Town, is renowned for its unparalleled vantage point to view the whales which breed and feed in Walker Bay (July - November) Independently owned, Hermanus's oldest hotel has been modernised while retaining the charm and hospitality so cherished by our guests, who return time and again for their homely seaside holiday experience.
big and spacious, 2 bedroom apartments, we stayed on the ground floor with a lovely large terrace, great braai facilities and sea views were awesome. Apartment is comfortable but needs upgrading as furniture is starting to look shabby, but I found it to be good value for money and we loved the spacious apartment with great sea views and close to all amenities and shops in the area.

WOW, what a stylish and everything you need apartment. We had the top 1 bedroom apartment. It is comfy, huge bathroom, very comfy bed. I would recommend this department for every traveler looking for accommodation in Hermanus. It is a self catering unit, but they do service the unit every day. You park your car behind access control gates and walk where you need to be. There is a good size pool and jacuzzi on the premises that can be used too. We'll definitely be back. This is a real GEM and so glad we have found it.
