6 Budget-friendly Things to do in Providencia Island That You Shouldn't Miss

July 9, 2021 Rosalyn Ihle

Providencia Island’s nickname: The Sea of Seven Colors. A visit to McBean Lagoon National Natural Park is really all you need for the quintessential island experience. It’s an otherworldly place where mangroves sway over waters that sparkle every shade of blue. Local fishermen will happily take you on an island tour or even to wrangle the day’s catch. Lounge on peaceful white sand beaches or take a romantic stroll across the wooden “Lovers Bridge” that leads to neighboring Santa Catalina island.

Crab Cay-Cayo Cangrejo

We were the first ones on the island the day we visited. Not even the cashier was there to charge us admission. As the island is on the east side, it gets the morning sun, which illuminates the myriad colors of the reef and lagoon. It was spectacular — especially since we were solo. The admission is for the full day, so if you do a full day boat tour (as we did) we started and ended the trip there - our boat captain dropped us off around 330 for 1.5 hours of sunbathing on the well-maintained dock steps from the lagoon. It gets popular in the afternoons with kids and locals and the food/beverages were sold out and closed by the time we arrived around 330, so plan accordingly (no water to purchase).

Our guide Leonardo gave us a wonderful introduction to the medicinal plants along the route to the Peak, and treated us to great stories of island residents past and present (including a couple of German soldiers who set up a homestead that eventually failed in the area of the park). Get to the top and you'll see all the fabulous shades of blue in the tranquil seas of Providence, which has thankfully preserved its rustic ways.

An absolute must if you go to San Andres! Take the Satena flight over and visit this less visited tropical paradise! Cangrejo Cay is absolutely beautiful!!!????????The snorkeling was fantastic and the views breathtaking!! Go earlier in the day as it tends to get more crowded in the afternoon.

Lighthouse Providence

Terrace with view over the sea where you can enjoy edutainment activities. The most popular are the 6 to 8pm - 30 minutes film projections about the islands, which are hold every day. The space offers a cafeteria service along with the activities, with veggie options. The terrace has a permanent reference library and an Intranet with local services information. Welcome!

We visited the lighthouse in february 2019 and were so happy to have been to this place. The owner of the lighthouse showed some very interesting movies about diferent aspects of the island of Providencia (animals, language, history, music). The movies were very interesting and beautiful produced (with local artists). In addition to the ‘old’ programm we could even see the newest movieproduction, which starts in this season. Thanks a lot to the owners for this great experience!

Morgan's Head

Some good snorkelling from the beach, saw a baby ray and a barracuda + lots of tropical fishies. We hiked out to Morgan's head but access to the water is quite limited when you arrive there.
