6 Budget-friendly Things to do in Hartbeespoort That You Shouldn't Miss

November 3, 2021 Mikaela Didonna

Hartbeespoort, informally also known as "Harties", is a small resort town in the North West Province of South Africa, situated on slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain and the banks of the Hartbeespoort Dam. The name of the town means "gateway of the hartbees" (a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. It was previously known as Schoemansville, named after General Hendrik Schoeman, a Boer General in the Anglo-Boer War, who owned the farm that the Hartbeespoort Dam was built on.

We went for an anniversary and had an amazing time!!! Terribly sad that so many of these animals ended up there due to irresponsible and illegal pet ownership. But a wonderful day out!

Family (wheel chair friendly!) outing catering for old and young. Apart from the various informative hikes (LOVED the titbits of information every where!), ride in the cable car and surprising GREAT restaurants on top of the mountain, there is also a very good play area for the kids with a jumping castle and lastly: the VIEW over Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounds (look out for the giraffe peeking at you as you ride with the cable car - adorable!!).

It was my first time going horse riding and I was scared at first but I was given the best and well-behaved horse named Juliet. It was an amazing experience and the open-air Swedish massage was the cherry on top. I would definitely recommend it to other travelers.
