We didn't go inside the villa, but the garden around the villa and up the hill behind it was full of lemon trees, wisteria, irises, and a green pathway up to an amphitheater with statues, beyond which was the penitential staircase made for Pope Alexander VII, for whom Bernini made a tomb in St. Peter's. At the top of the hill of this long crumbling staircase is a Romitorio, where a real monk lived until the nineteenth century. We couldn't make it all the way up, but those who did felt truly "beatified." Make sure to look at the double stairs at the back of the villa, too; they are probably the model for Chiswick in England since they predate Burlington's building. We saw both this garden and La Foce in the same trip and loved both for different reasons. Cetinale absorbs the hill into the landscape of the garden, while La Foce forces the viewer to compare the "intimate rooms" of the garden with the vast land beyond.
