Giffords Hall Vineyard

Reviewed By WoolpitAreaClassic1

This was an organised tour for Woolpit Area Classics, who arrived at Giffords with 11 classic cars. The Giffords team were delighted to host our visit & thrilled to see our "prides & Joy". Also present was a photographer from the FT ready for a feature in their publication. Giffords staff are so welcoming & truly love what they do.The vineyards are set on the top of a hill overlooking wonderful Suffolk countryside. The vineyard tour was interesting, informative & brilliantly delivered by Emma. Part of their organic secrete are 3 sheep (Keith & 2 mates) who help clear the areas around the vines & trim the off the lower branches of the vines. The tour was followed by a sit down tasting where we sampled 3 wines, namely, their 2018 Rose, 2017 Bacchus & 2016 St Edmundsbury Red. What fun we had while Linda skillfully gave an informative commentary. This was a truly memorable visit for our WAC group, who enjoyed the "Giffords" experience & loved the teams enthusiasm. Thank you Giffords. John Bolden

Delightful self-guided tour of approximately 1km around a charming small scale vineyard in a lovely location followed by a tasting of first class English wines. The tour is very well laid out and delivers lots of interesting and relevant information at each point of interest. At the end of tour tasting the owners are very happy to answer any questions and clearly take great pride in their wines, which of course they are very happy to sell too you. The tour is very good value and suited to both novices and enthusiasts.

I've visited the vineyard a few times over the past couple of years. Three times for the tour, and a couple of times for the 15 mile lunch. Hannah and Ben who own and manage the Vineyard are great hosts and everyone is made to feel very welcome. The tour (which lasts about two hours) is led by Ben. His encyclopedic knowledge of wine/winemaking is impressive, with his passion for combining the technical and traditional sides of winemaking being a central theme. I always find the content of the tour really interesting and Ben is always happy to answer any questions that the group throw at him. Of course, no vineyard tour is complete without sampling some wine! I personally really enjoy their wines, so much so that I have joined their Venn wine club. If you have time the "15 mile lunch" is a worthy addition to the tour. It comprises local meats, cheese and bread with a choice of wine to accompany it. Overall I have nothing but praise for Flint. Keep up the excellent work! It's also worth knowing that if like me you have a passion for craft beer, the farm site on which Flint is based is also home to a separately run business named Ampersand. If you time it right you might find their taproom open when you visit Flint :)

Shawsgate Vineyard

Reviewed By Sharonfv - Greater London, United Kingdom

Firstly I must apologise for not writing this review earlier, Especially in these difficult times when all positive reviews are needed. On a mini break in Suffolk we drove past a sign for this vineyard and decided to pop in, what a wonderful surprise we got with a warm welcome from the owner with a map in hand to show us round the vines. It was a beautiful sunny day in September, After we walked round the vines, tasting some of the grapes ripe and ready for the wine making. At the front there are small tables with parasols to sit at for tastings. There was absolutely no hard sell and the amount of wines he gave us to taste were more than generous. We could have easily walked out without buying but any of the wines were vegan and delicious. Thank you for your hospitality and I do hope you go from strength to strength in these difficult times I forgot to mention that there was absolutely nothing to pay for walking round or for the tasters.

Wyken Vineyards - Gardens & Country Store

Housed in a converted 400 year old barn, the Leaping Hare restaurant, has been in the Good Food Guide for 20 consecutive years, as well as being a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. We serve a blend of modern and traditional European dishes, made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients. Wyken Cafe boasts the same quality of food and service as our restaurant and serves breakfasts and lunches daily. Offering a slightly lighter option, it can provide the perfect accompaniment to a walk around our gardens.

Despite the overcast, damp day and lockdown #2, Wyken brought a ray of sunshine to our Saturday! The Farmers Market presented a wide variety of good quality stalls, with welcoming, chatty vendors, happy to discuss their produce. After a steaming hot much needed coffee, we pre-ordered our lunch, to look forward to after our walk. We navigated a 5km loop (advertised on their website) mostly on rural footpaths, taking an hour and a quarter. My delicious rich Lamb Tagine with giant cous cous, mint yoghurt and paprika toasted almonds hit the spot perfectly as did my husband’s Suffolk Salami wood fired sourdough pizza. We chose to eat in the warmth of our camper van, although there is an open sided barn with chairs and tables on offer. We must congratulate Wyken on their precautionary Covid measures, they have adapted marvellously to the current difficult times. We certainly look forward to returning once the Leaping Hare Restaurant and Shop are permitted to open!
