Sigtuna is a picturesque lakeside town steeped in Swedish history. Founded in the late 10th century, it’s the oldest town in Sweden and still retains much of its medieval charm. During the Christmas season it becomes an even more magical place, as holiday markets pop up all over the city, selling local handicrafts and fragrant goodies. Paddle along Lake Mälaren, marvel at church ruins and runic stones or just explore the shops of the charming main street.

Beautiful place and wonderful staff

First, the cost is very reasonable and includes breakfast. It is self serve style and varies slightly from day to day. I found the breakfast items very interesting. They always served scrambled eggs and some type of meat, like sausage or bacon. In addition, they also had soft and hard boiled eggs. There is a large selection of cereals, breads, cheeses , fruits and vegetables. The tea selection is extensive with loose and bagged teas. There were at least four juices plus water and coffee. So much variety to choose from, there is no way that you could go hungry. The end room in the dining areas has bench seats. We sat by the window overlooking the trees and lake each morning before starting our day. It was such a pleasant experience. Serene. It is about a fifteen minute ride from the airport by taxi. The price for a taxi is fixed at around $35 each way. Very accommodating. They were closed on Sunday but Veronica met us when we arrived on Sunday in order to check us in. The staff was kind and considerate. The hotel decor is fun and eclectic. They have bees to support the environment. Lots of windows. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. No need to bring shampoo or conditioner, it is provided in the shower. Our room also had sparkling water and teas (teapot too). No fridge but you do not need it. We chilled a bottle of white by opening the window and sitting out on the stone window like a charm. Hair dryer is provided too. We had everything that we needed. The hotel is a short walk to the town and other sites. The bus line is maybe three minutes away. You can take the bus to Märsta station and then catch the rail to Stockholm. We explored the oldest town in Sweden by visiting the SigTuna museum and runes (get map at tourist office in town). There are multiple restaurant’s,a grocery store, and package store at the end if you choose to eat in. The people are friendly and helpful. Autumn is a great time to visit. Still plenty of daylight and the foliage is unbelievable. The pictures are just a glimpse. It is a beautiful place and we enjoyed our stay in the oldest hotel in the oldest town in Sweden. Much more relaxing than Stockholm and stunning.

The facility is situated on a height overlooking lake Mälaren and you never have to walk far to get to where you need to be. The kitchen offered a great blend of what the season could offer supported by friendly and attentative service. Being at Sigtunahöjden for a conference, the facility offers a wide variety of meeting rooms and break-out spots to stay creative. Warmly recommended if you want to have a different setting to your conference than the average hotel.

A cold hotel in all angles

Reviewed By Hallgren_Nykvarn

Before I say a lot I would like to mention the positives. They followed our request upon booking and when we were there we were allowed to change rooms without problems (but not by the same person who checked us in, maybe the manager). Wifi was functioning very well, so good for work in hotel. Parking outside was free. They also contributed to safety in Covid times by placing a hand sanitiser dispenser on all tables in the breakfast room. The first room we were given was very cold even with the heater fully on and with our outer clothes still on. The room we changed to had a functioning heater and a great view of the lake. The room was very bare and gave a cold feeling due to sparse furniture and with no carpets at all on the floor. We needed slippers here but none was provided. Only a bed and desk were provided. No tea kettle nor coffee/tea, no fridge, which are now quite standard in the hotels we visited lately especially if you pay higher. No coffee either from lobby. Breakfast was cold (with a touch of warmth served personally, to one each , in a muffin cup containing some spoons of scrambled egg and pieces of one bacon strip.) We were one of two guests/parties in the hotel so breakfast seemed safe in the corona times. Had there been two more, the one small buffet table would have been risky. Check-in and check-out were done cold. With two guests they did not even take the time to welcome with a smile or check you out with the normal "hope you had a nice stay". Gave a feeling that they were tired of working for this hotel. We asked for a 30-45 min extra time as it was heavily raining and check out was 11 am . This could not be provided. We thought maybe they only now have 2 rum o kök instead of 32 rum o kök. We did not get much value for the price we paid compared to more than 20 hotels we visited the past 3 months in Sweden.

Simple hostel

Reviewed By lucashed

My partner and I were staying in Sigtuna for one night just to explore the town, so we booked this hostel since it was quite cheap. We were a bit confused in the beginning on how to check in and to get our room, then we realized the email we got that explained that there was no staff and you had to get your keys by yourself. The room is simple but adequate. Two separate beds, free wifi (which wasn't that good) and access to a common room with a fully stocked kitchen. One aspect that we did not take into account is that the hostel is roughly 20 mins walk away from the city centre We played cards in the common room and played billiards at the entrance in the evening, which was fun, but the hostel was basically empty (I guess due to corona). I would not stay here longer than a couple of days - but how much exploring of Sigtuna can you really do in more than two days? Not too much. All in all, a simple hostel that lives up to expectations. Nothing more, nothing less.
