We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed everything about this peaceful place! Fern owns the house and is a wonderful host and beautiful person. If you want to get away from the rat race of city living this is the place to be and relax. The accommodations are fantastic and the hospitality beyond our expectations! I sincerely recommend this delightful B&B!

Relax in small-town comfort in charming downtown Mount Carroll. Our historic, restored 1865 building features two 600 square-foot suites, combining rural charm with contemporary amenities and style. Guests will find fresh fruit, yogurt, home-made granola, coffee and tea, as well as fruit juice in the kitchen. Spend the day exploring the historic buildings and architecture of Mount Carroll, antiques, and the beautiful pastoral landscape of the Driftless Area. Then, come home to cocktails and a delicious meal downstairs at Molly's. Downtown Mount Carroll is ten minutes from the Timber Lake Playhouse, the longest running summer stock theater in Illinois. We are also ten miles from the Mississippi River and Palisades State Park.
Wandering through this small, sleepy town one would never know of the hip and extremely comfortable rooms at this Inn. Fantastic furniture and attention to detail. If I lived in Mt. Carroll, I would simply live here!

This hotel was constructed in 1886. It has been renovated BUT kept the old charm. The owners live on site and are very accomodating, friendly, and helpful. As on a phone call I mentioned we were celebrating our 11th anniversary, when entering our room I found a wonderful surprise. Roses and chocolates. Short drive to a play at the Timberlake Playhouse and theatre. Good restaurant choices.

My husband and I were planning to stay in Mount Carroll to visit Raven's Grin Inn, a year round haunted house( which is hilarious, spooky, historical, one of a kind) over Memorial day weekend. I was surprise when I call all the local hotels and bed breakfast's to find out they were booked because of Mayfest. One of the places I call recommended Red Ruby Inn. Wow, what a gift! This beautiful red brick home on one of the red brick streets of Mount Carroll is just two short blocks to downtown. The theme of the Inn is the Wizard of Oz, the ruby slippers, I was impressed with all the details. The owner is Susie a lovely woman, Mount Carroll lifer, who is warm and friendly but gives you plenty of space. She also gave us directions to the nearby Mississippi Palisades Park where we hiked to wooden look outs on cliffs where you can see panoramic views of the Mississippi River and large birds- turkey vultures now but in January and February bald eagles nest here. This is a bed and breakfast without the breakfast and the price reflects this. This was fine because there are cute inexpensive places to eat nearby such as Molly's, Sievert's, Mad Hatter Tea Room and antique shop, Charlie's ll. I recommend Red Ruby Inn and Mount Carroll for an inexpensive, laid back, genuine, quirky getaway.

Country Palmer House is located on a spectacular ridge just a short distance northeast of Mt. Carroll. I recently spent the night there with an old friend who had been my room-mate at nearby Shimer College over 50 years ago. We made the drive out from Chicago to revisit our old campus, and needed a place to spend the night before returning home the next morning. We had a clean, comfortable, second story room with a spectacular view all the way to the Mississippi, Iowa and beyond. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast the next morning, along with the company of Alan and Joann Palmer, whom we found to be very gracious hosts. I would not hesitate to recommend their B & B to people visiting the area.
