5 Things to do in Yaren That You Shouldn't Miss

January 17, 2022 Sachiko Swiger

Yaren, the administrative capital of the world’s smallest island nation, houses Nauru’s government buildings and airport. The rest of the island’s attractions are in walking distance, as this Micronesian country is only 8 square miles wide. Occupied by the Japanese during WWII, a walk around the coast offers visitors the chance to explore numerous surviving bunkers and pillboxes. Inland, the phosphate fields, created by years of strip mining, have left the island with an almost lunar beauty.
