Mollendo is a town bordering the Pacific Ocean in southern Peru. It is located in the Arequipa Region and is the capital of both the Islay Province and the Mollendo District. Mollendo was the main port in the Peruvian southern coast until Matarani was developed about 50 years ago; the port of Mollendo only serves fishermen for the local economy currently and all the commercial shipping is done through Matarani 12 kilometers north; the old port is in ruins. From about 1830 to 1880 it was important in the Guano trade.

Not much in Mollendo, but worth wandering around. The beach is interesting - a stroll along the sand is good for people watching - Peruvian vacationers having fun at the seaside. Just up the Main Street from the square is a fruit & veg market - again worth a visit

This area has the potential to be a very beautiful place but to really make it first class the municipality needs to renovate up some of the old buildings. The views of the ocean are great and the little seaside park quite nice. The most annoying part of the area was the smell of urine - we literally had to cover our noses in certain areas - perhaps a public toilet near by would help alleviate this problem?

The center of Mollendo, where all the restaurants are, is 4-5 blocks so you can't help but walk through the Plaza. It's a pleasant experience with lots of people watching and kids playing

I like the history behind the Castillo - quite interesting, and I like the fact that many people think it's haunted. There was a woman creating a large sand sculpture of the "spirits" in the house the day we were on the beach - this really added to the attraction
