Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle

Reviewed By KevinRSheffield_UK

Only around half of the original stones remain but enough to show they were a good compact circle. The location is great with fine views in most directions. It would clearly have been a prominent feature in the prehistoric landscape althou an EH information board map sows that it was not alone with another stone circle (now gone), standing stones and a mass of long and round barrows within a close area. The track is easily walked with only a very gentle gradient and with the fine views it invited us onwards. Note that the easy walking also continues in the other direction after the tiny section of road walking, suggesting that the middle of the zig-zag modern road just utilises the smallest piece of a far older trackway. We'll come back another day armed with a picnic and more water for the dog so we can explore this route further but for now the stone circle and views made this a worthy stop in our journey. Note - while there is parking for a few cars up the track there is more space immediately off the road as the rough track starts. And it is such an easy and pleasant walk I'd strongly suggest you park just off the road and start there.
