It blows my mind that a world renowned artist would choose such a beautifully desolate and remote area of my home state to create such a thought provoking art installation. Lake Ballard is a salt lake roughly a two hour drive north of Kalgoorlie. From Menzies, the nearest town, it is roughly an hour on sealed and gravel road, easily done in a hire car (no 4wd necessary, the gravel road is in good condition though there were a few spots that had star pickets with pink tape to indicate a rough section - easy to miss these if you are not paying attention and you could hit one and puncture a tyre). The statues by Antony Gormley were actually smaller than I was expecting, but no less impactful. There are 51 set across the expanse of the salt lake, and there are ample opportunities to take photos against dramatic backdrops. There is a camping ground with toilets, but no water. We only visited for a few hours in the morning, but it would provide a spectacular viewing of the night sky if you were to stay overnight. Check the weather conditions before you make the trip out there - I'd recommend taking ample water, wear a hat and sunscreen and a flynet for your face - we went on Easter Sunday early in the morning but the day soon warmed up and the flies nearly drove us insane, buzzing in our eyes, mouth and ears!

On the way out of town toward Lake Ballard is the old Menzies Cemetery . Lots of information available at the cemetery about 5e history of the town and the people buried there.
