Portola Redwoods State Park

Reviewed By Troop42

Camped two non-weekend nights in a beautiful quiet campsite. There are 5 RV sites with an RV length limit of 24’. The length limit is probably due to the narrow and curving roads driven to get to the spacious campsite. Camp Host Mike was very welcoming with history and hiking information. Visitor Center host, Sarah, camped here with her family as a kid and she was also a great source of information. The Visitor Center sells cans of both Pepsi and Coke from their cooler. The Visitor Center was built by the Islam Temple Shrine of San Francisco who owned the Redwood property as a summer retreat from 1924 to 1945 when they sold their operation to the State of California to create a new state park.

We went to Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. Its a pretty area to hike with good views. It is accessed via Skyline Boulevard, which is a pleasant tree lined road with good views of the Bay Area and distant views of the Pacific Ocean.

Skyline Ridge Preserve

Reviewed By drbetteridged - San Lorenzo, United States

I was surprised that on such a beautiful day, at 11:00 am, the parking lot was empty. So much the better. This was a great place to spend a day. There are two picnic tables, and a few open bits of grass that you might want to spread a picnic blanket out. Plenty of benches along the paths, as well. The lake is smaller, but very pretty. I didn't see a lot of wildlife, but could hear the birds and there were a few ducks on the lake. The trails are a slight challenge for those really out of shape or older, but they are still manageable, again thanks to the benches and taking your time looking at nature. It is very serene and I could have sat on a bench by the lake for hours. Everyone was very respectful in putting on their mask as we came near each other, but it wasn't crowded enough to have to do that but a couple of times. I'll definitely go back again to continue to explore. Just be careful driving in, as there are many bicycle riders in the area.
