Stunning gorge with crystal swimming pools. Well worth the drive, and the walk down the road to get there. Steep but you can do it in flip-flops, though the same can't be said of the 5km walk along the river.

This is one of the Aldeias de Xisto, a series of Schist built villages. Sao Simao is particularly stunning, with its hillside setting, Forests and beautiful cottages. Endless photo opportunities exist here!

José Malhoa one of the most important portuguese painters that lived between the 19th and 20th century came to Figueiró dos Vinhos invietd by an uncle and felt in love with the region. He decided to build this little palace nicknamed the Cocoon because of its cosyness! Today it's a well preserved place where you can get local information at the reception desk and also about the painter, his life and this nice building. There is an Art Center close to it and also a Chess Museum, besides a garden surronding the house.

The main church of Figueiró dos Vinhos also called Igreja de São João (Saint John church) was built in the end of the 15th century and it's located in the center of the town. From looking at the facade one wouldn't suspect the rich interior with walls decorated with blue and white 18th century tiles, paintings from José Malhoa from the beggining of the 20th century and old statues. You can admire arts from the Maneirist style, Manuelin, Baroque and Neo-Gothic.

The visitors center is in a very modern building, next to the historic Malhoa's Cocoon Home. As you enter the visitor's center there is a very well done chronological history of the area, done on the long hall way, complete with pictures and in English too. Then there is a great map of the area, with all sorts of maps, pamphlets all free to help in your exploring of this area. The receptionist spoke English and was very helpful in answering our questions. There is a small gallery of current local artists, sculptures and paintings. Then there is the main gallery which has historical paintings of the famous artists that were from Figueiro dos Vinhos or moved to the town to do their art work. Of course there is a large selection of Jose Malhoa's art. We were given a pamphlet to follow along in the gallery, that was printed in English.
After finishing the gallery, another young lady took us through Malhoa's Cocoon, it is a beautiful beautiful and has been wonderfully restored. It does not have period furnishings, but the basic architecture has been preserved.
This whole experience is a wonderful way to start your visit to this lovely village.
