Chester Theatre Company is a professional theatre company located in the foothills of the Berkshires. Under the leadership of current Artistic Director Byam Stevens, CTC has earned a reputation for producing the best in contemporary theatre. The Boston Globe calls CTC "an out-of-the-way treasure," and the company is known for its outstanding, thought-provoking, actor-driven productions.
My husband and I have been to two productions at CTC and both were wonderful. The shows we saw were both historical - one about Lincoln, the other about Teddy Roosevelt. The plays are staged in the auditorium of the Chester Town Hall, a building dating from the 1930's. The current artistic director, who I believe is now going into his 2nd season, really looks far and wide for inspiration. The current season appears ambitious and a couple of their chosen works are probably over my head. They actors are a mixture of Equity talent and others. If you enjoy theater, CTC is definitely worth looking into. Check out their website and, if they're mounting something appealing, give them a try. We go to other venues in the Pioneer Valley, i.e. the Majestic in W. Springfield. Chester is about 30 minutes from either Westfield, Pittsfield or Northampton.

CHESTER RAILWAY STATION is a museum that was named a National Historic Landmark in Jan., 2021. According to the Dept. of the Interior, landmarks are particularly suited to illustrate the history of the United States. The first mountain railroad was built here. There is a 102 year old caboose on the property that is rented out for overnight camping and a hands-on room in the Children's Boxcar. It is also an event venue for weddings, parties and meetings.
After hiking at the Keystone Arches, we stopped at the Chester Railway Museum and received an afternoon of interesting railroad and historical information from its curator Dave. We were able to step back in time with a stop in an original caboose as well as seeing and learning about George Washington Whistler, his vision and the start of the rail industry. A must visit for railroad fans and for anyone who enjoys learning about America and our history.

This is one of the beautiful hidden gems of the hill town areas and it does not disappoint. As a lifelong hilltown local, it is a little upsetting for us that live here because the parking lot is always full with out-of-state travelers who fill the parking lot and then continue to park where there where there no parking signs all along Middlefield Road hill, which is extremely dangerous to the locals who drive down that hill not expecting cars to be halfway in the middle of the road. If people could be more respectful of the environment and enjoy the beauty and think about everyone else it would be wonderful. It’s also sad because out of stators seem to bring in a lot of trash but never take it out. Also if anyone reads this please abide by the Massachusetts COVID-19 guidelines, which expects out of stators to have negative test results or quarantine for 14 days before entering our state. Just know because of these new rules there will be police patrolling the area and ticketing as we all know you are not following guidelines. If you’re not from Massachusetts please do not come visit at this time.
