Courmayeur is a town and comune in northern Italy, in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley. At an elevation of 1,224 m (4,016 ft) above sea level, it is located at the foot of the southern side of Mont Blanc, at 4,810 m (15,781 ft) the highest point in the Alps and western Europe (see Seven Summits), and is crossed by the Dora Baltea river. Courmayeur shares administration of Mont Blanc with its neighboring commune of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in France, and is consequently able to claim the title of highest commune in Italy. Courmayeur also shares access to the glacial ski run of the Vallée Blanche with another French town, Chamonix, which sits at the opposite, northern, side of the Mont Blanc massif.

Skyway Monte Bianco

Skyway Monte Bianco is much more than a cableway to reach 3,466 meters. It’s an idea: drawing man closer to the mountain and sky, broadening our horizons, overcoming boundaries. Beautiful landscapes to explore and the sky to meet.

During a very hot summer 2018 when everyday temperatures reached almost 35 degrees Celsius we were searching for some refreshment so we decided to make a trip into mountains with a cable car “Skyway Monte Bianco”. With one ticket costing almost 50 Euros (both ways) it was not a cheap attraction, but it was definitely worth this money. We were lucky with the weather what allowed us to enjoy splendid mountain panoramas. Most of the time the top of the Mont Blanc was hidden in the clouds but there were many other beautiful views we could admire from the open panorama deck or from the restaurant in the covered gallery one level below. The terrain around the upper station was covered with snow and the outside temperature at that height was below 0 Centigrade what together made right conditions for getting some refreshment during that hot summer. Of course we were equipped with warm jackets but we were happy to have a cup of coffee sitting inside the upper station and watching the mountains around through glass windows. At the lower mid-station it was much warmer therefore we spent much time walking outside.

We had a great day snowshoeing in Courmayeur. We were lucky with the weather, it was sunny and not windy. The next few days were cloudy/snowing/windy. First thing in the morning, we visited the office in city centre to pick up equipment (snowshoes and poles for me, my friend had all his own equipment). Afterwards our guide Luca took us to the Skyway lift in his car. We met the rest of the group in the cafe at the entrance of the lift. We took the rotating gondola together and when we reached the top, we descended down some steps before putting on our snowshoes. Everyone is tied to each other with a rope and we walked in a line. For the next 4 hours we were hiking in the glacier, mostly flat terrain with one small uphill and one real uphill climb. The group reached its max capacity of 8 people (4 groups of 2, half the group speak Italian and half speak English). The views were breathtaking, it was just so gorgeous. There were plenty of mini breaks and photo opportunities and our guide explained the different peaks/their names. Small warning though, even though the walks may be mostly flat, and at times one may feel "why are we moving so slowly?" - trust your guide. Combination of the high altitude (3500m) and the soft snow = early muscle fatigue. My hamstrings were so sore the following day. It didn't help that after we finished the tour around 2-3pm we squeezed in a cheeky hour of snowboarding in Courmayeur! If I could make a small suggestion though, one member of the group was not as fit as the others and were struggling with the pace/altitude. Later on he looked tired and started to struggle with the equipment. However, he was in the back half of the group and at times it was difficult to communicate to the group leader/guide. I think once this was identified, we should have rearranged the group and placed him at the front right behind the guide. As it is quite a large group it would also be good to use some hand signal to indicate when we are stopping, or turning left or right. Being at the very back, I could feel the "domino effect" of the group uncertainty, i.e. sometimes I felt we were slowing down (rope getting slacked and becomes tangled among our snowshoes) before picking up the pace and then abruptly coming to a full stop. Hand signal would clear this confusion!
