The artillery fortress Heldsberg was part of the border fortifications in the Rhine Valley. Built into a rocky crest and with its four built-in guns of 7.5 cm it dominated the southern part of the Lake of Constance in the north and the bridges over the Rhine up to Montlingen in the south. Seven built-in machine guns and other infantry weapons as well as antitank guns in bunkers outside the fortification covered the approach. With galleries of 1000 m length and a height difference of 160 m, Heldsberg was one of the biggest border fortifications of Switzerland. The garrison counted 200, the one for exterior defence 400 hands. Constructed 1939 - 1941, operating until 1990, the fortress was handed over to the registered association Festungsmuseum Heldsberg in 1993.

This is a fun way to spend an hour and a half doing something fun indoors (out of the cold and wet) with a group of people of differing ages. We were a group of 5: 3 young teens, my wife and I. It's interesting to have to work together to find and solve a series of puzzles in order to progress from room to room to then escape. There's help on hand to guide if time is getting tight or you take a wrong direction based on your interpretation of the clues and artifacts presented. The time flies and it's a combination of fun and mild stress so that you emerge relieved and entertained. Hopefully everyone finds something or solves a clue to feel part of the team effort. I want to go again! Pre-book online well in advance to avoid disappointment.

The route for the walk is the following: Sargans - (429 or 430 bus) - Wangs - Cableway to Pizolhütte (44 CHF return) - Wangsersee - Pizolhütte - Wildseeluggen - Schottensee - Schwarzsee - Baseggla - Baschalvasee - Gaffia. From the mountains around Pizol you can see the territory of Lichtenstein, almost disappeared glacier around Pizol and famous Churfirsten! It is better to start a hike around 9-10 a.m. It takes around 4-5 hours. Amazing views, if the weather is good.
