5 Spas & Wellness in Plaka That You Shouldn't Miss

February 17, 2022 Concepcion Newsome

Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

Alexia has a unique way of making you feel relaxed and at ease whatever your yoga level. Her style is that of observation and gentle guidance, letting you comfortably enter each pose. She has an intuitive way of being in sync with her students, discreetly adapting her lesson accordingly. She has an appeasing while matter of fact way when giving instructions, which is very refreshing (I have a distaste for the 'all knowing', 'celestial' or 'inspired' kind of voice/attitude many yoga instructors adopt). And she can do this in three different languages. Alexia gives lessons in her studio situated in the very center of Athens, as well as outdoors in the National Garden in good weather. I have been following her lessons for more than a year now (incl. the online Zoom sessions during lockdown). She also organises yoga retreats throughout the year at various beauty spots around Greece. My partner and I joined the Nisyros island retreat last July. It was great fun. A whole week with yoga classes twice a day (sometimes on the beach, or on hilltops), combined with a laid back sightseeing schedule that enabled us to mingle or not, with the group, sample the local eateries, go swimming and do a little further sightseeing on our own. More important, Alexia does not impose on you the usual yoga discipline related restrictions (no alcohol, no smoking, strict vegetarian meals etc.), which is really refreshing.

Not only was the quality of my manicure and pedicure excellent, communication with the salon was easy and convenient. I was able to schedule and reschedule my appointment online. I knew that I wanted to go back to this nail salon, as I had a manicure there two weeks before. The service was excellent, the spas was very clean and of an international standard, and everyone spoke English. A wonderful salon indeed. I will be back on my next trip to Athens.

This was my first time at a Hammam. The staff speak English and give you instructions about what to do. The steam room itself is relaxing. I also opted for the exfoliation and bubble massage. The therapist checked to see how I was doing (water temp, massage pressure) and was very good. Afterwards you can take tea and Turkish delight (aka loukoumi) on the terrace. I left feeling both relaxed and renewed. I went in the morning but this would also be great to do at night to wind down. Bring your swimsuit.
