While this sits along Interstate 81, it is so peaceful and quiet when you get there. It is a small gem but we were glad we stopped. It was nice just sitting inside for a short while. We also enjoyed reading notes other visitors had left.

Big Walker Lookout is the designated overlook of the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway that is on US-52 between exit 52 & exit 47 of I-77 in Virginia between Bland, Va & Wytheville, Va. It is just 12 miles north of I-81 from exit 70. This is one of the few accessable places in the east where you have a 360 degree view of the mountain valleys & farm-scapes of the Appalachian Mountains. Big Walker Lookout features the BW Country Store with 25+ artisans & crafters' handmade works. It is a Crooked Road Affiliated Venue that features free, live concerts every Saturady & Sunday from May through October. We also feature artists & crafters demonstrating their talents on the front porch every weekend throughout the spring, summer & fall. We feature homemade ice cream, farm fresh fudge & delicious chocolates. It is a great hiking, biking and trail biking trail-head for beginner & expert adventurers. Big Walker is a historic pass where, during the Civil War, Molly Tynes traveled to Wytheville to warn of the impending Toland's Raid. It is a Virginia Birding and Wildlife view area and a raptor migration path. Come by for a visit. We are open year round 10-5 and later in the summer.
I originally visited here in the summer and liked it so much I decided to stop again this past October. The day was clear and almost cloudless and the vista from the Big Walker Lookout parking lot was breathtaking. No photo can quite capture the breathtaking view from the summit. I didn't climb the tower this visit but I went into the store and had lunch. They got a great meal deal that includes a good hot dog with all the fixins including chili, choice of chips, drink & ice cream cone for $5. After lunch I decided to take the 1/4 mile trail from the tower to a gigantic rock formation called Monster Rock. It is aptly named. It's really worth seeing and is a nice short hike in the woods atop the mountain. I saw the sign post on my first trip and decided on seeing it on this visit. On return to the parking lot, I went back into the store to pick up some Big Walker Lookout private label jams and jellies packed in old fashioned Mason jars. I selected a jar of blueberry preserves to take home and it was very good. This is a great alternate off I-77 if you're looking to get away briefly from the hectic interstate and really isn't much out of your way whether travelling north or south. You'll just lose a little time so just look at it as a most unique rest stop. The view from the top of Big Walker Mountain is well worth any small amount of time lost on the interstate. You can't appreciate the mountain driving through the Big Walker Mountain tunnel on the interstate. You've got to get off and take Rt. 52 up to the Lookout Tower & Country store to discover something special.

Always looking for interesting things on our journey across the USA. And we are constantly amazed at what is out there. We stopped for lunch at Flourz and walked around town. The largest pencil is a marketing tool for the office supply store but it is a great photo op and fun to see. Learned about the rivalry with the other store across the street. No dull moments on our trip! Do go inside to see the giant scissors and the giant ruler.
