We love visiting the Deadening Alpine Trail! The scenery is beautiful along Lake Martin and through the woods and the trail is challenging! This particular trail is a 4.2 mile loop or you can choose the shorter option which is 3.1 I believe. The later two miles are particularly rough with a lot of switchbacks. Every time you think you have left the shore for good you return. My advice would be to make sure you eat either before or bring a lunch, bring LOTS of water, and stop for a bathroom before you leave HWY 280 (there is not one on site). Also be prepared to get a lot of sun exposure and spray for ticks (we had one on us even after spraying). Lastly, on both visits we have seen very few people here on the trail, so be prepared if hiking alone! There are other trails nearby so be sure to check them out! They are all through the same organization. I would also recommend Smith Mountain and the fire tower there. Just be prepared for another uphill trek and ~108 stairs to the top. The view is so worth it though! Their website has driving directions and detailed descriptions of the trails as well.
