Mitchell lake Audubon Center is a great place to go birding. It's always an adventure because you never know what you'll see. I went today and saw snowy egrets, little blue little green and great herons. A large flock of cedar waxwings. Dozens of Wilson's phalaropes migrating through, a red-tail hawk, least grebes, blue-winged teal, a few northern shovelers, an avocet, dowitchers, multiple dickcissels and scissor-tailed flycatchers. All this in about two hours The roads going around the several ponds can be closed if there has been significant rain, so if there has been recent rain call ahead to make sure the roads are open. The staff is excellent and there are a lot of family friendly events scheduled throughout the year.

Medina River Natural Area

This is an incredible escape from San Antonio hustle and bustle, an easy jump from the urban/suburban to the deliciously rural. The greenway is paved so easily accessible, but enough twists, turns and elevation variants to keep the hike or run interesting. There's lots of wild life, including feral hogs, which for some reason I always enjoy watching despite know the damage they do. If you're a runner (like me) take water!

Denman Estate Park

Small little park near the medical center. There is a walking trial that takes you around the pond at the park. The pond does have fish in it, although I'm not sure what kind they are. The biggest we saw was probably around 8 inches. We also spotted 9 turtles there in the water. Several different duck families at the pond. There are about 7 picnic tables scattered about in the park. The entire area is covered with plenty of shade trees. We visited the park this past Saturday when the temperature was 98 degrees, but the shade from the trees made it pretty comfortable. Usually we throw our old bread pieces in the freezer and wait till we have about 10 slices and we take them out there to feed the fish, turtles and ducks. None of us were bit by any mosquitoes on our trip there. This was our 5th time coming to Denman Estate Park.
