The dramatic and romantic desert fortress of Jaisalmer is an exotic city in Rajasthan’s great Thar Desert. "The Golden City" rose to prominence as a result of its position on camel trade routes. It's now most famous for the 12th-century fort and ornate "Havelis," fine merchant-built houses and pavilions in the city’s medieval lanes. The surrounding Desert National Park offers opportunities to observe blackbucks, desert foxes and chinkaras amid the rolling dunes, rugged crags and waterholes.

The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermed
A 3 hr safari in the DNP was the highlight of our trip to Jaisalmer. I recommend going early, to get past the checkpost at sunrise. In March, we saw many unusual birds: the critically endangered great indian bustard, cinereous and griffon vultures, eastern imperial eagle, trumpeter finch, the isabelline and desert wheatears, black-crowned sparrow lark and the greater short-toed lark. Best of all, they were easy to spot in the wide open desert and made for some wonderful photographs against the dunes. There is very limited traffic here: most people head for the dunes for a camel safari instead, and that too later in the day. So if you are interested in wildlife, do NOT miss this!

We wanted a quiet morning and we thoroughly enjoyed the couple of hours we spent on the edge of the lake. We drank coffee, listened to authentic live music, did a bit of shopping , and took photos . We went back to our hotel rested and revived.

The wood fossil park is managed by rajasthan govt. Few fossils have been dug out and kept near entrance. Other fossils are still at their original location at about 1 km inside the park. The park is located on Barmer road. Caretaker gives briefing about the fossils if asked for. Its a gold mine for paleontologist and Others interested but nothing much has been done. However, whatever is available in park is very interesting. There are also 3 Emu at entrance which are extremely friendly and will pose with u for photograph. These emu were abandoned by someone nearby and are now being taken care by park caretaker.
