April 28, 2022 Phylicia Berquist

Arrecife (/ˌærəˈsiːfeɪ/; Spanish pronunciation: [areˈsife]) is a city and municipality in the Canary Islands (Spain) situated in the centre-east of the island of Lanzarote, of which it has been the capital since 1852. The city owes its name to the rock reef ('Arrecife' is Spanish for 'reef') which covers the beach located in the city. The city also gives its name to the nearby Arrecife Airport.

Museo Aeronautico del Aeropuerto de Lanzarote

This is such a brilliant little museum, run by volunteers. It is housed in the original airport building and it is fascinating to see how things have changed in what is a relatively short period of time. A great deal of thought and effort has been put into setting up the museum and it's brilliant. You can see the air traffic control part, the cafe area as well as examples of the uniforms worn by the airline staff. There is a good book collection and some excellent posters as well as a very thought-provoking cabinet showing the kinds of items that were confiscated. When we visited there was also an excellent display of aircraft and airport related models, all made from recycled plastic. There were some excellent little booklets available too, aimed at children. It's a wonderful little museum.

Museo Arqueologico de Lanzarote

We loved this place and can’t believe it had so little publicity. There are two entrances, looking at the front of the property you enter by the left door. Currently €3 per adult. There is a VR experience of an archaeological dig which I found amazing - so much thought had gone into the displays. Although small (3 main areas) they pack a good deal of information into them. There are more resources than you’ll have time to see!! There are examples of amphorae, millstones and other fragments in addition to some underwater finds. Once you finish the left side, your ticket also gets you into the right side which deals with the history of the magnificent building. We spent 90 mins total and I loved every minute. I hope they decide to expand as it is showing great promise at the minute

La Casa Amarilla

La Casa Amarilla is an informative space of the Cabildo of Lanzarote which organizes temporary exhibitions focusing on the knowledge and memory of Lanzarote. La Casa Amarilla is the familiar name of an old house, former headquarters of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, in León y Castillo street. It is a two-storey building, a landmark in the city, and an example of eclectic architecture for administrative purposes. It was built in the 1920s right in the heart of the historic centre of the capital of the island, Arrecife. It was named a Cultural Interest Site in 2002, and it underwent intense renovation work that has turned it into a modern and functional building, remaining true to its original facade

Every exhibition we have been to here has been very well designed and presented, with supporting documentation in Spanish and English. At the start of our visit the member of staff gave us an explanation in english of the main features of the exhibition - this personal touch was much appreciated. This exhibition was about traditional customs of Buches and Diabletes which both involve wearing masks, of which there were many from Lanzarote and other areas of the world. Good film to watch too. Exhibitions change regularly so check for what is on when you visit. Well worth the modest entrance fee.

Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo Castillo de San Jose

The Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo-Castillo de San José, is located near Puerto Naos and Arrecife, capital of the island, and the place where César Manrique was born. It was built between 1776 and 1779 under the ruling of King Charles III. The museum’s privileged location on top of a cliff, made protection from Castillo de San Gagriel easier, and it meant it was a crucial spot to defend Arrecife and its port from the dangers the modern states posed to the Spanish Empire. When its use for defensive purposes decreased, it was left abandoned for almost a century. It was Manrique (who else), who convinced the authorities of the island to transform the ancient fortress into an art gallery that ended up opening in 1976, the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo. Manrique started up the 1st International Visual Arts Competition with the work of Picasso, Tàpies, Miró, Mompó, Millares, Zóbel and some of his own creations that inspired one of the largest abstract art collections.

We read about the fortress and as we were very impressed with other projects Cesar Manrique was involved with, wanted to check it out It is small but the restoration is incredible. If you aren’t that interested in art, you can enjoy the exterior with some funky sculptures and go down an exterior stairwell to enjoy the cafe where Cesar’s touch is unmistakeable The admission fee is super reasonable only 4 euro and we liked the artworks very much Great way to spend a couple of hours on the outskirts of Arrecife
